Pangkor or Redang for a family on a budget?
You are counting the cost for the whole family and want to see how transfers change it.
A family budget is decided by the lines around the room, not the room itself. Redang adds a Merang boat of about 45 minutes and a marine park fee, while Pangkor adds a Lumut ferry of about 30 to 45 minutes. Research found no prices for either, so this page gives you a worksheet to fill from your own quotations.
Our guide on whether a cheaper island package is still cheaper after transfers explains the idea, and the cost calculator does the arithmetic.
What does research confirm for each island?
| Pangkor | Redang | |
|---|---|---|
| Boat | Lumut about 30 to 45 minutes [1]; Marina Island about 10 to 15 minutes [2] | Merang about 45 minutes [3]; scheduled ferry from Kuala Terengganu about 1.5 to 2 hours [4] |
| Park fee | Not found | Reported RM30 adult and RM15 child (6 to 12) without MyKad; RM5 and RM2 with MyKad [5] |
| Package price | Ask for a written quote | Ask for a written quote |
The Redang fees come from secondary sources, so confirm them and ask whether they are already in the package.
How do transfers change the total?
For a family of four, every transfer line is multiplied by four. A boat that looks small per person becomes a larger line for the group. Our guide on the Merang boat transfer in a Redang package shows how to read that line, and our page on Pangkor ferry and island transport costs covers the Pangkor side.
The practical implication: ask whether the boat is priced per person or per boat, and whether children have a lower rate.
What is the family worksheet?
Fill one column for each island, using the numbers from the written quotes.

A better fit if…
Pangkor may be a better fit if:
- you want a shorter journey and a lower number of transfer lines.
- you are happy with a simple stay.
Redang may be a better fit if:
- you want a resort that bundles meals and the boat in one package.
- you have the time for a longer journey.
Another island is a better fit if you need a fixed price before you commit. Our guide on family-island holidays on a tight budget sets out other methods.
When is the season?
Redang is on the east coast, where most resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March [6]. Our research did not confirm Pangkor’s season. Ask each for its open dates in writing, because cheap months are sometimes cheap because places are closed.
Questions for a line-by-line quote
- Is the boat included both ways, and is it priced per person or per boat?
- Is the park fee in the price, and what is the child rate?
- Which meals are included?
- What is the road leg and parking cost?
- What is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?
Send the same list to both and compare with the resort inclusion comparator.
Common questions
Which is cheaper for a family, Pangkor or Redang?
Research found no confirmed prices for either, so we cannot rank them. Redang adds a Merang boat and a marine park fee, while Pangkor adds a Lumut ferry. Ask each operator for a line-by-line total for your family, then use the worksheet on this page.
What are the Redang park fees for children?
Reported at RM15 per child aged 6 to 12 without MyKad, and RM2 per child with MyKad, with adults at RM30 and RM5. Those come from secondary sources, so confirm them with the operator and ask whether the fee is already in the package price.
Does Pangkor have a park fee?
Our research did not find one for Pangkor, so ask the operator whether any entry or activity fee applies. Do not assume the answer is none. Ask for every fee as a separate line in the quotation.
Are Redang and Pangkor open all year?
Redang is on the east coast, where most resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Our research did not confirm Pangkor's season. Ask each for its open dates in writing, and for the rule if the boat cannot sail.
