How to choose a Malaysian island for your holiday

You want a good island trip, but every name looks lovely and nobody explains how to decide.

Choosing an island is easier when you stop asking which one is best. Decide five smaller things instead: where you leave from, when you travel, who is coming, what you want to do and what you can spend. The answers point to two or three islands, and a quotation does the rest.

This guide walks through each decision. You do not need to know every island. You need honest answers to the five questions below, and our island shortlist matcher can help you turn them into a short list.

Where will you leave from?

Pick a jetty before you pick an island, because the journey is part of the holiday. Redang boats leave from Merang, with a speedboat time of about 45 minutes [1]. Perhentian boats leave from Kuala Besut, about 40 minutes to Besar [2].

Tioman is reached by ferries from Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok in Pahang, and tickets are best bought in advance [3]. Boat times come from secondary sources, so confirm them with the operator. Our guide to the journey in four legs shows how to plan the road, jetty and boat together.

When will you travel?

Your month narrows the list faster than any review. The northeast monsoon, roughly October to March, closes most resorts and restricts ferries, and November to February is the wettest [4].

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. If your holiday falls in that window, read our guide to a west coast island when the east coast is closed for monsoon. Nobody can promise the weather, so ask what happens if the boat cannot sail.

Who is coming with you?

A group of friends, a couple, a family with small children and parents travelling together want different things. Resorts that arrange the boat and meals suit people who prefer fewer decisions. Simple chalets suit people who like to choose as they go.

If someone in your group cannot swim, say so early. Our guide to the best Terengganu island for non-swimmers lists the questions to ask about supervision and life jackets.

What do you want to do there?

Decide what a good day looks like. Do you want to snorkel, rest on the beach, dive or just sit with a book? Some resorts bundle a snorkel outing and some sell it separately.

Ask whether the marine park fee is in the package. It is reported as RM30 for an adult and RM15 for a child without a MyKad, and RM5 and RM2 with one [5]. Confirm the amounts with the operator.

What can you spend?

Your budget decides the stay type, the meal plan and the length of the trip. We do not quote package prices here, because they change with dates and room type. Read how much an island holiday costs to see the cost lines, then use the cost calculator with your own numbers.

What is your next step?

Write down your month, your group and your starting point. Then pick two islands from the list above and ask each the same questions about meals, boat, fees and cancellation. When you are ready for a quotation, read what details to send so the first reply is accurate.

If you have a rough month and group in mind, send them to us on WhatsApp and we will help you narrow it to two islands and the questions worth asking each one.

Common questions

How do I choose between an east coast island and a west coast island?

Start with the month you want to travel. East coast islands such as Redang and Perhentian have resorts that close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. If your dates fall in that window, a west coast island may be the practical choice. Ask the operator for open dates.

Which island is best for a first-timer?

We do not name a single best island, because it depends on your group, your starting point and your dates. A resort island with an arranged boat is simpler for a first trip. Our comparison of Redang and Perhentian Besar is a good place to start.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Not necessarily, but say so when you ask for a quotation. Ask about life jackets, supervision on snorkel trips and whether staff can help non-swimmers. We never declare a place safe, so put your questions in writing and read the answers.

How early should I decide?

Decide the dates first, then the island. School holidays and long weekends can fill early, and the monsoon closes many resorts. Once you have dates, a jetty and a group size, you can get a quotation that is easy to compare.
