Which island fits your trip?

You are torn between a few islands and want a short list with the gaps marked.

This tool turns three simple choices into a short list of islands: region, longest boat ride and travel months. Each island shows what our research found and what you still need to confirm. It is a starting point, not a recommendation.

If you already have a list, move on to the resort inclusion comparator. To understand why dates matter so much, read the northeast monsoon explained for island travellers.

How do I use the matcher?

Choose the options that fit and press the button. You can change them and run it again as often as you like.

  1. Pick a region, or leave it on anywhere.
  2. Choose the longest boat ride you are happy with.
  3. Say whether you travel between November and February.
  4. Read each island card and note the lines marked confirm.

Practical implication: a short list with five marked unknowns is more honest, and more useful to an operator, than a long list of confident guesses.

What is it built on?

The island data comes only from our own dated research notes. Each entry has a region, a departure jetty, a reported boat time where one was found, and a monsoon flag.

Examples of what that looks like: the crossing from Kuala Besut to Perhentian is reported at about 35 to 45 minutes,[1] and the speedboat from Merang to Redang at about 45 minutes, with the northeast monsoon closing most resorts from roughly October to March.[2] Where we found nothing, the card says so.

How does it treat unknowns?

An unknown never counts as a yes or a no. If the boat time is missing, the island stays on your list with a “confirm” line. If a source says an island closes in the monsoon and you travel in those months, it moves to a left-out list, so you can see what was removed and why.

This keeps you from dropping a good option because our notes were thin. It also stops a closed island from looking available.

What can it not do?

It does not check availability, prices or live sea conditions. It does not say an island is safe, suits non-swimmers, or is easy for older parents. Those are questions for the operator, and our guide on what to ask when the east coast closes shows how to start.

A better fit if you want a first narrowing. If you already know your island, the cost calculator or the jetty planner will help more.

A worked example (hypothetical)

Imagine a family choosing for a school holiday in July, wanting the east coast and a boat ride of 45 minutes at most. They tick “no” for November to February.

The matcher might show Redang and Perhentian first, because both have a reported boat time inside the limit. Lang Tengah appears too, with a boat time at the limit. Islands with no boat time on file, such as Tioman, stay on the list marked confirm. This is an illustration of how the tool reads, not a recommendation.

What should I do with the result?

Take the cards you like and ask the operators the “confirm” questions in writing. Send the list to us if you want help. Our method page on how we compare explains how we weigh the open points.

Send your short list to us on WhatsApp and we will check the open points with the operators and suggest resorts to compare.

Common questions

Does the matcher rank islands from best to worst?

No. It filters on the limits you set, then lists the islands with the fewest open questions first. That order is about how much we could source, not about which island is nicer. The right choice still depends on your group, dates and budget.

Why do so many islands say confirm?

Because our research could not find a reliable source for them. A boat time or closure period that is missing stays marked as confirm. We would rather show a gap than invent a number.

Can it tell me an island is safe for my children?

No. It does not judge safety, swimming ability or access. Those depend on the resort, the weather and your family. Ask the operator about life jackets, supervision and beach conditions before you book.

How current is the data?

The notes are dated 16 October 2026 and most boat times come from secondary sources. Closure dates vary by resort and year, so treat every result as a starting list and confirm with the operator.
