Is a cheaper package cheaper after transfers?
One package has a lower headline price and you suspect the boat and jetty costs are hiding elsewhere.
A cheaper package is only cheaper if its price advantage is larger than the transfers, fees and ground travel it leaves out. Add those lines to the lower price first, then compare. The break-even rule below does the arithmetic in one step.
For the wider budget picture, see what an island holiday costs in Malaysia. The island trip cost calculator can hold both packages side by side.
What is the break-even rule?
Call the price of the package with the boat included A, and the cheaper package with no boat B. Call the cost of the missing lines M.
- Work out M: the boat legs, the fees and any ground travel not in B.
- Add M to B.
- Compare B plus M with A.
If B plus M is more than A, the package with the boat included is the cheaper one. The gap between the headline prices has to be larger than M for B to win.
What does M look like for one route?
Take Perhentian as a worked example, with a group of four adults. A blog reports a speedboat ticket at RM35 one way and RM70 return per person [1]. For four, the return boat is four times RM70, which is RM280 [1].
If B leaves the boat out, B must be more than RM280 cheaper before anything else is counted [1]. A reported taxi boat between the two islands adds about RM20 per hop [2].
Park fees add RM5 each with a MyKad and RM30 each without [3]. These are reported figures, so confirm them with the operator.
Which six lines does a low headline price often leave out?
Use this as a checklist for the cheaper package.
| Line | Question |
|---|---|
| Jetty to island boat | Is it included, and in both directions? |
| Inter-island hop | Is there a hop, and who pays? |
| Park or council fee | Is it in the price, or paid on arrival? |
| Jetty or access fee | Is there a fee, as reported at Semporna [4]? |
| Parking or ground travel | Where do I park, and what does it cost? |
| Night before the boat | Do I need a stay near the jetty? |
Each line you cannot tick becomes part of M. Our guide to what the package includes for jetty fees and boat tickets shows how these lines are usually written.
A worked comparison
Suppose the headline gap between B and A equals M. Here M is the boat at RM280, plus park fees for four with MyKad at RM20, which is RM300 [1] [3].
B plus M then equals A, so there is no real saving, and the extra legs add effort. If the gap is smaller than M, A wins.
Change the group size and the answer changes. The point is to do the sum with your own numbers rather than trust the headline.
A better fit if…
The cheaper package may suit you if its price gap is clearly larger than M and you are happy to organise the legs yourself. The package with the boat included may suit you better if you value one clear total or are travelling with young children or older relatives. See our guide on which legs count in a boat transfer for the wording.
What should you ask both providers?
- Which legs are included, and in which directions?
- Which fees are included, and which are paid on arrival?
- Is there any parking, taxi or inter-island cost not in the price?
- Can the quotation show all lines for my exact group?
Common questions
How do I know if a package includes the boat?
Ask which legs are included: the jetty to the island, the island to the jetty and any hop between islands. A package that says transfer included may mean one leg only. Ask the resort to list each leg in the quotation.
What is the quickest test of a cheaper package?
Subtract the cheaper package's missing lines from the dearer one's saving. If the saving is smaller than the boat, fees and ground travel you must add, the cheaper package is not cheaper. The break-even rule on this page does exactly that.
Are the boat fares on this page current?
No. They come from a blog with no date and one operator listing, so treat them as examples of the pattern. Ask the operator for the current fare for your dates and group before you compare.
Should I always choose the package with the transfer included?
Not always. An included transfer saves effort and sometimes money, but only if the legs and times suit you. Compare the total after you add the missing lines to the other package.
