When is the best time to visit Malaysian islands?

You want good weather, an open resort and a fair price, and nobody explains how they fit together.

The best time depends on which of four things matters most to you: the weather, whether the resort is open, how busy it is, and what happens if the boat cannot sail. These are four separate questions, and a good date for one can be a poor date for another. Start by choosing your island group, then check each question in turn.

If you are still choosing where to go, our guide on how to choose a Malaysian island helps first. Then come back here to test your dates.

Why is “best time” really four questions?

Most people ask one question and expect one answer. In practice the answers pull in different directions.

QuestionWhat it decidesWho answers it
Is the weather pleasant?Sun, rain, sea comfortNobody can promise it
Is the resort open?Whether you can book at allThe resort
Is it crowded or sold out?Price, queues, availabilityCalendar and demand
Will the boat sail?Whether you arrive and leave on timeOperator and sea conditions

An island can be open but unpleasant, or closed but fine on a given day. That is why a weather forecast alone never settles the booking.

How does the northeast monsoon fit in?

The northeast monsoon is the main reason east-coast islands have a season. It roughly runs from October or November to March, and the wettest weeks are reported as November to February [1]. Most resorts close and ferries are restricted during this period [1].

On Perhentian, most islands are reported as essentially closed to visitors in the heavy months, though a daily boat still serves the Kecil fishing village [2]. For the weather detail, read our northeast monsoon explainer.

Official onset dates are announced late. For the 2025/26 season the forecaster announced a 13 November start, and the next season’s date was not available when we checked [3]. Exact opening and closing dates are set by each resort and vary by year, so treat any month list as a starting point only.

What about islands outside the east coast?

West-coast and Sabah islands do not follow the same calendar. Some stay open through the months when the east coast shuts, which is why people look for alternatives. Our guide on west-coast islands when the east coast is closed covers that choice.

We have not verified a month-by-month weather table for these islands, so we do not publish one. Ask the resort what its own busy and wet weeks look like.

When do holidays change the answer?

A calm week can still be a sold-out week. School holidays, public holidays and long weekends push demand up and can bring surcharges. The 2026 school year runs to 31 December, and the 2027 session starts on 4 January [5], so year-end weeks sit right beside the closing east coast.

Our school holiday calendar guide lines these dates up with demand.

What if the boat does not sail?

Sea warnings are published and refreshed about every three hours, and travellers can check them on the forecaster’s site and the myCuaca app [4]. The operator and resort decide whether a boat goes, not the traveller. Read what to ask about cancelled boat transfers before you pay a deposit.

A simple date check for any island

  1. Choose the island and the two or three dates that suit your leave.
  2. Ask the resort for its season dates for this year, in writing.
  3. Ask how busy those dates are and whether a peak surcharge applies.
  4. Ask what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail.
  5. Run the numbers with the island trip cost calculator.

A better fit if…

Choosing a date well in advance suits you if you travel with children or older parents. Choosing last minute suits you only if your dates are flexible and you accept that some resorts will already be full or closed.

Tell us when you can travel, who is coming and which island you have in mind, and we will help you ask for the opening dates and boat terms in writing.

Common questions

What is the single best month for a Malaysian island?

There is no single best month, because the answer depends on the island and on what you need. East-coast islands such as Redang and Perhentian are usually open in the drier months and shut for the northeast monsoon. West-coast and Sabah islands follow different patterns. Pick the island group first, then ask each resort for its dates.

Can I visit an east-coast island during the monsoon?

Most resorts close for it, so the usual answer is no. Some mainland-linked or west-coast islands stay open, and a few places may take guests on calmer days. Never assume. Ask the resort whether it is open on your dates and what it will do if the boat cannot sail.

Is a cheaper date always a worse date?

Not always. Dates just outside the busiest weeks can be quieter and may cost less, but they can also sit close to a closing date. Weigh the saving against the risk of rough seas and ask for the cancellation terms in writing before you pay.

How far ahead should I decide on dates?

Decide the season at least a few months ahead, and the exact dates as soon as your leave and school dates are fixed. Popular school-holiday weeks can fill early. Resorts usually confirm their season dates only for the year you ask about, so ask early.
