Perhentian Kecil or Kapas on a tight budget
You are counting every ringgit and want the cost structure of each island laid out.
Kapas has the shorter crossing, and Kecil has the chalet scene backpackers know. On a tight budget the island matters less than which lines you pay for, so compare boat, fees, room and food. The sections below show what the research confirms and what is still a question.
For the islands, see the Perhentian Kecil guide and the Pulau Kapas guide. For a two-person total on Perhentian, read the Perhentian budget for two adults.
How do the cost structures compare?
The table shows the lines that make up each trip. Where the research has no confirmed figure, it says to ask.
| Line | Perhentian Kecil | Kapas |
|---|---|---|
| Jetty | Kuala Besut | Marang |
| Crossing | About 35 to 45 minutes to Perhentian [1] | About 15 minutes, 6 km [5] |
| Boat fare | Reported RM70 return per adult, blog, date unknown [2] | Not confirmed, ask |
| Park fee | RM5 per adult with MyKad, RM30 without [3], and a council charge reported in 2022 [4] | Not confirmed, ask [6] |
| Stay | Chalets and small resorts | West coast beaches facing the mainland [7] |
| Extra hop | Taxi boat Besar to Kecil, about RM20 in one blog [8] | Resort boats of 10 to 15 minutes at some places [7] |
Which lines are fixed, and which can you move?
The boat and fees are close to fixed, so they matter more on a short stay. The room, food and trips are the lines you can change.
Take the fixed lines first, because you cannot argue with them. Then ask about the lines you can move: a dorm or shared room, a self-catering kitchen, a cheaper meal place, and the number of paid trips.
For each island, ask what the room price includes. Our guide on budget chalets versus mid-range resorts on Perhentian goes deeper for Kecil.
How does the shorter hop help a tight budget?
A shorter crossing can mean a smaller boat line and less time between the jetty and your bed. It can also let you arrive later in the day and still use the evening.
Kapas boats are reported to run from about 07:00 to 17:00 [5]. Our guide to Marang to Kapas, the short hop explains the first and last boat. Check the Kapas fare with your accommodation, because the research did not confirm it.
What does Kecil add for a backpacker?
Kecil has chalet-style stays and a social feel in places such as Long Beach and Coral Bay. Our research could verify only two Kecil properties, so we cannot list the rest. Read quiet versus social bases on Perhentian Kecil to choose a beach.
Ask each chalet for its room price, the shared-room option and the meal price nearby. Totalling that against the boat gives you a fair view.
When does the season matter?
Kecil is mostly closed to tourists during the heavy monsoon from November to February [9]. We have no confirmed season for Kapas, so ask. Our guide to Kapas season and weekend access helps with the rest.
A better fit if…
Kecil may be a better fit if:
- you want a social chalet scene and a choice of beaches.
- you can travel on a longer weekend.
Kapas may be a better fit if:
- you want the shortest crossing and a simple plan.
- you are on a short weekend with limited time.

Common questions
Which is cheaper for a backpacker, Kecil or Kapas?
We cannot say without quotations. Kapas has a shorter crossing of about 15 minutes, which may keep the boat line lower, but we have no confirmed Kapas fares. Compare the boat, the fees, the room and the food for both, using the same dates.
What fixed costs does Kecil add?
A speedboat fare reported at RM70 return per adult, the marine park fee, and possibly a council charge reported in 2022. A taxi boat between Besar and Kecil is reported at about RM20. All come from secondary sources, so confirm them.
Is Kapas in a marine park?
Our research could not confirm Kapas's marine park status or fee. The Department of Fisheries lists a smaller 1 nautical mile zone for Kapas. Ask your accommodation whether any park fee applies to you.
Do both islands close for the monsoon?
Kecil is mostly closed to tourists during the heavy monsoon from November to February. We have no confirmed closing dates for Kapas, so ask each place for its season in writing before paying a deposit.
