Island booking checklist before you pay

You are close to sending a deposit and want to be sure nothing important is missing.

Before you send a deposit, check five things. Was your enquiry complete?

Does the quote list every line? Who is responsible for each part?

How will you pay, and where did the facts come from? Each takes a few minutes, and together they prevent most of the surprises that spoil a holiday.

Work through the stages below and tick as you go. Keep every answer in writing, because a message you can show later is worth more than a promise on the phone. The island trip cost calculator helps with the sums.

Stage one: was your enquiry complete?

A quote is only as accurate as the question behind it. Send your dates, the number of adults and children with their ages, your starting point, your budget range and what you cannot compromise on.

Stage two: is the quote complete and current?

Read the quote line by line. Look for the room type, meals, boat transfers in both directions, park fees, taxes and the total. Then look at the date on it.

Stage three: who is responsible for what?

An island trip can involve an agency, a resort and a boat operator. Ask who runs each part and who you contact if something goes wrong. Our guide on who is responsible explains the usual split.

Ask for the company name and its licence number. Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) offers an online licence check by company name or licence number [1].

The direct address changed when we checked, so search for it and confirm. Read how to verify a tour operator is licensed and what the Tourism Industry Act means for island bookings.

Stage four: how will you pay, and what if plans change?

Ask how much the deposit is, when the balance falls due, which payment methods are used and what the cancellation and refund rules are. Ask in writing, and name the date you will decide.

Stage five: where did the facts come from?

Check that boat times, fees and season dates trace to a source and a date. Figures in this site carry an as-of date, and unverified ones are marked. Read how to read as-of dates to see what that means.

If something goes wrong, the Tribunal for Consumer Claims hears claims up to RM50,000, within three years, with exclusions such as personal injury [2]. Start with a polite written complaint. See consumer protection and complaints for travel bookings.

What if you are comparing two agencies?

Run the same checklist on both and keep one note per stage, with the date of each answer. The agency that answers more stages clearly, in writing, is easier to plan with, even if its price is not the lowest.

Do not let a short deadline push you past a stage, because a rushed deposit is the hardest one to undo. If an agency sets a very tight deadline, ask for the reason, and ask whether the price can be held for a day while you finish the check.

The one-page tick list

  • My enquiry listed dates, people, ages, budget and essentials.
  • The quote has every line, a total and a validity date.
  • I know who runs the room, the boat and the activities.
  • I checked the company name and licence number.
  • I know the deposit, the due dates and the refund rule.
  • Fees such as park charges are marked as included or extra.
  • Every answer is saved in writing.

A better fit if…

This checklist may be a better fit if you are about to pay and want a final check. It also works if you are comparing two agents with one list.

A deeper guide may be a better fit if one stage worries you most. Pick the link above and read that one first. We are an independent guide, and our role is not the booking desk.

Send us the quote you have, even a screenshot, along with your dates and group, and we will help you tick through this list before you pay anything.

Common questions

What should I check before paying a deposit for an island trip?

Check five things: that your enquiry gave complete details, that the quote lists every line, who is responsible for each part, how and where you will pay, and where the facts come from. Keep everything in writing. This page links to a guide for each.

How do I know a tour company is licensed?

Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) offers an online licence check by company name or licence number. The direct address changed when we checked, so search for the MOTAC licence check and confirm the company's name and licence number match what you were given.

What if the booking goes wrong after I pay?

Keep your messages, quote and payment proof. The Tribunal for Consumer Claims hears claims up to RM50,000, within three years, with some exclusions. Start by writing to the company, then see our guide on complaints.

Is a screenshot of a price a real quote?

Treat it as a lead, not a quote. A real quote names the dates, people, room, meals, transfers, fees, total and how long the price holds. Ask for a written quote and read it line by line.
