Child marine park fees and park entry costs

You are adding up what each child pays to enter a marine park.

Children usually pay a lower park fee than adults, and the amount depends on the child’s age, nationality and the park. The reported east-coast marine park band for children is 6 to 12 years old. In Sabah, some parks admit young Malaysians free.

Use the table below to learn the pattern, then confirm the current figure with the operator. Our guide to whether the marine park fee is included or paid on arrival shows how to read the line in a quotation. The island trip cost calculator can add it up.

What do children pay at each park?

Figures come from different sources and dates, so read them as a guide.

Park areaChild fee reportedSource type
Redang and Perhentian marine parksNon-MyKad RM15, MyKad RM2 (child 6 to 12) [1]Secondary, medium confidence
Tioman and nearby marine parkNon-Malaysians RM15, Malaysians commonly RM2 [2]Resort page, medium confidence

Pulau Tiga, SabahMalaysian 13 to 17 RM2, foreign 17 and below RM12 [4]Sabah Parks, high confidence

The Sabah Parks figures come from an official page. The east-coast figures come from secondary pages, so they are less certain.

Why can there be a second layer?

At Besut, a district council was reported in 2022 as charging an extra RM5 per visitor on top of the fisheries fee, with its current status unknown [5]. If that charge applies to children on your trip, it adds to the park fee for every child.

Ask the operator two things. Is there any charge on top of the marine park fee?

And does a child pay it? Do not assume either answer.

How do you work out the park cost for your own children?

  1. List each child’s age on the travel date.
  2. Find the band for each child in the table or in the operator’s reply.
  3. Note whether you hold MyKad, since the east-coast reports separate holders from non-holders.
  4. Multiply each child’s rate by the number of days the fee applies, if it is charged per day.
  5. Add any second-layer charge and the adult fees.

Some parks charge per day and some per visit. Ask which one applies to your stay.

Worked example: two children, 6 and 9, with MyKad

On the reported east-coast schedule, two children aged 6 to 12 with MyKad pay RM2 each, which is RM4 in total [1]. Without MyKad, they pay RM15 each, which is RM30 in total [1]. Add the adults on the same schedule, then any council charge, and you have the park line.

A better fit if…

If your family does not hold MyKad, plan a larger park line, since the reported gap is large. If you travel to Sabah, check the age bands for the specific park, because the cut-offs differ from the east coast. Our guide on Malaysian and non-Malaysian marine park fees compares the two groups.

What should you ask the operator?

  • What is the current child fee for my child’s age, and is it per day or per visit?
  • Is the fee in the package, or do we pay on arrival?
  • Is there any council or other charge on top?
  • Which document do you need to see for a child?

Tell us the island, the children's ages and whether you hold MyKad, and we will help you ask the operator for the exact park fee for each child before you total the trip.

Common questions

Do children pay a marine park fee?

The research shows children do pay on the east-coast marine parks we checked, at a lower rate than adults, with a band of 6 to 12 in one case. In Sabah, some parks let young Malaysians in free. Confirm the rate for your child's age and nationality with the operator.

Is the marine park fee in the package price?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It is a separate line from the room and boat, so ask whether it is included, who pays it, and when. Our guide on marine park fees included or paid on arrival explains how to read that line.

Why does a child pay two charges at Perhentian?

A 2022 report said a district council began charging an extra RM5 per visitor on top of the fisheries fee. Its current status is unknown, so ask the operator whether it applies on your dates and whether it covers children.

Are these fees fixed?

No. They come from several sources of different dates and reliability, and fee schedules change. Treat the table as a starting point and ask for the current figure in writing before you budget.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
