Is Pulau Redang right for your trip?

You want clear water and a calm few days, and you want the trip planned properly.

Pulau Redang is a quiet Terengganu island with clear water, reached by a short speedboat ride from the Merang jetty. It suits couples, families and friends who want rest, snorkelling and a resort that arranges the meals. It suits you less if you want nightlife or a cheap, flexible backpacker stay.

Most practical questions come down to the boat, the season and what your package includes. We cover each below, and our island cost calculator lets you check the sums with your own numbers.

Who is Redang a better fit for?

Redang is a better fit if you want a resort holiday where the beach, meals and boat are arranged together. Parents with young children may like that someone else plans the day. Couples who want slow mornings and a quiet sea may feel at home here.

Another island is a better fit if you want small cafes, cheap chalets or a lively evening scene. Perhentian may suit that taste, and our Perhentian Besar island guide lets you compare.

Where is Redang and how do you get there?

Redang is in Terengganu, in the Kuala Nerus District [1]. Most guests leave from the Merang jetty, where the speedboat takes about 45 minutes [2].

A scheduled ferry also runs from Shahbandar in Kuala Terengganu, and it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours [3]. These times come from resort and travel sites, so confirm the departure point and time with your operator.

Our guide to the Merang jetty and how arrival works covers the road and airport side. The jetty connection planner helps you test your own timings.

Which beach and area should you stay at?

Pasir Panjang on the east side is the largest beach, with about half a dozen resorts [6]. Teluk Dalam in the north and Teluk Kalong in the south are other resort areas.

Berjaya Redang Island Resort is at Teluk Siang in the south and has 97 rooms, while its site does not state the meal plans [7]. Read what we have confirmed on our Berjaya Redang Island Resort page, then compare it in Redang Island Resort vs Laguna Redang.

Ask each resort whether you can walk to the main beach and where the house reef is. The answer shows how much of your day depends on a boat.

When is the season, and when does Redang close?

Redang is affected by the northeast monsoon, roughly October to March. Most resorts close and ferries are restricted, with November to February the wettest months [4].

In practice, most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by resort and year, and nobody can promise the weather. Ask your resort for its season dates, and ask what happens if the sea is too rough on your travel day.

What fees should you expect?

Visitors pay a marine park conservation fee. It is reported as RM30 for an adult and RM15 for a child aged 6 to 12 without a MyKad [5]. With a MyKad, it is RM5 for an adult and RM2 for a child [5].

These amounts come from secondary sources, so confirm them with the operator. Ask whether the fee sits inside your package or is paid at the jetty. Our guide on marine park fees, included or paid on arrival shows how to read this line.

What does a Redang package cover?

A resort package can bundle the room, some meals, the boat and a snorkel outing, but the mix differs by resort. Some include all three meals each day, and some only breakfast. We cannot tell you which without asking the resort.

Our guide to Redang package inclusions lists what to check, line by line. Treat the written quotation as the final word, not the brochure.

How much of your trip is real island time?

Take a 3 day, 2 night trip as a simple sum. Count the drive to the jetty first, then the boat ride, then check-in at the resort. On the last day, checkout comes before the return boat.

The boat departure times decide your usable time. If the last boat back leaves at midday, a three day trip may give you only one full day on the sand. Ask for boat times in writing, then use the planner above to count your hours.

What should you ask before you book?

Send these questions to the resort or agency before paying a deposit:

  • Which jetty and boat time does my booking use?
  • Are all meals included, and which ones?
  • Is the marine park fee included?
  • What are your season dates this year?
  • What happens if the boat cannot sail?
  • Are there surcharges for school holidays or weekends?
  • How do I confirm child and senior rates?

The clearer your dates and group size, the more exact the answer. If you are still choosing between islands, start with how to choose a Malaysian island.

Common questions

Is Redang good for a first island trip?

It can be, if you are comfortable with a boat ride from Merang, about 45 minutes long, and a package that runs on the resort's own schedule. The island is quiet and the resorts handle most things for you. If you like to wander between cafes and shops, ask the resort what is walkable before you choose a beach.

When is Redang closed for the monsoon?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by resort and year, and sea conditions can change plans even inside the open months. Ask the resort for its season dates in writing, and ask what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail.

Do Malaysians pay the marine park fee on Redang?

Malaysians reportedly pay a lower rate than foreign visitors, but the amounts come from secondary sources and can change. Ask whether the fee is already in your package or paid at the jetty, and bring your MyKad. Confirm the current amount with the operator before you travel.

Can I go to Redang without a package?

Some visitors book room, boat and meals separately, but most guests use a resort package because boat seats, meals and snorkel trips are sold together. Separate bookings can work if you have time to compare. Send us your dates and group and we can help you read what each option covers.
