Tioman or Pulau Besar for a family trip?

You are choosing between two Mersing-area islands for children and want to compare boat, room and beach.

Pulau Besar has the shorter reported transfer, about 30 minutes by resort speedboat, but the boat only runs at high tide. Tioman offers seven villages and more room choice, but research did not confirm its ferry time. Neither island’s shoreline is rated here, so each family decision below ends with a question for the resort.

Do not confuse this Pulau Besar with Perhentian Besar, which is in Terengganu. Our guide to choosing a Johor island explains the wider choice, and the Pulau Besar island guide has the details we found.

How do the two islands compare for a family?

Read the empty cells as questions. The fee amounts come from a dated source, so confirm them and ask what the rate is for each child.

Why does a tide-timed boat matter to parents?

A boat that only runs at high tide means the departure time moves from day to day. Your child’s nap, a late breakfast or a delayed car can then decide whether you make the boat.

Ask the resort for the boat time on your arrival day and your departure day. Then plan the morning around it, not around check-out. Our guide on low-tide boat transfers explains the problem.

What changes with Tioman’s villages?

On Tioman, the village you choose decides your beach, your food options and how far you walk with a pushchair. Our notes on arriving at Tekek versus other villages show how day one differs.

A bigger island also means more transport on the island itself. Ask how you get from the ferry jetty to the room, and whether staff help with luggage.

What should you ask about rooms and beaches?

For children, the details of a room matter more than its name. Ask for the room type, the number of beds, whether the room is on the ground floor and whether a cot or extra bed is possible. Our guide on extra bed costs for children shows how this affects the quotation.

On the shoreline, ask how quickly the water deepens, whether there is a marked swimming area and whether a lifeguard is on duty. Nobody can promise a calm sea, so ask what the resort offers on a rough day.

A better fit if…

Pulau Besar may be a better fit if:

  • you want a shorter transfer and can plan around a tide-timed boat.
  • you want a simple weekend with a single resort.

Tioman may be a better fit if:

  • you want to choose a village, a room and a meal plan yourself.
  • you have time for a longer stay and a longer journey.

Another island is a better fit if your child is unsettled by boats and you want the shortest crossing possible. Our guide to family islands near Kuala Lumpur looks at other options.

When is the season?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March [6]. Exact dates vary by resort and year. School holidays can fill early, so ask for availability before you compare prices.

Questions to send both

  • What time is the boat on my arrival and departure days?
  • Is there a covered seat, and are child-size life jackets provided?
  • Which room type fits two adults and two children?
  • How far is the room from the beach and the restaurant?
  • Which meals are included, and what do children eat?
  • What is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?

Once you have two written quotations, the resort inclusion comparator lays them side by side.

Tell us your children's ages, your dates and how much you want arranged, and we will help you put the same boat, room and beach questions to a Tioman stay and a Pulau Besar stay.

Common questions

Which is easier with young children, Tioman or Pulau Besar?

Pulau Besar has the shorter reported transfer, about 30 minutes by resort speedboat, but the boat follows the tide. Tioman gives more choice of villages and rooms, though research did not confirm its ferry time. Ask each operator for the crossing time and a covered seat on your date.

Is Pulau Besar the same as Perhentian Besar?

No. Pulau Besar off Mersing is in Johor, and Perhentian Besar is in Terengganu. Check the state and the jetty on every quotation, and ask the agent which one they mean if the quotation only says Besar.

Are there shallow beaches for children?

The research we checked does not measure beach depth on either island. Ask each resort how far a child can wade before the water is deep, whether the swimming area is marked and who watches it, and ask for photos taken at low tide.

Do both islands close during the monsoon?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask in writing for the season dates, and for the rule if the boat cannot sail on your travel day.
