Is Perhentian Besar right for you?
You like small bays and a boat ride, and you want to choose with open eyes.
Pulau Perhentian Besar is the larger of the two Perhentian islands in Terengganu, reached by a speedboat of roughly 40 minutes from Kuala Besut [2]. It suits travellers who like small bays, a choice between chalets and resorts, and a boat ride as part of the holiday. It suits you less if you want to reach the island within minutes of landing or need every detail arranged for you.
Our guide on how to choose a Malaysian island covers the wider decision, and the island cost calculator lets you test the sums.
Who is Perhentian Besar a better fit for?
Perhentian Besar is a better fit if you are happy to compare a few stays and choose the bay that suits your group. Couples, friends and families who like a relaxed pace may feel at home here. Research names Tuna Bay, Abdul’s Beach, Teluk Pauh and Flora Bay as areas, and some of these names are still unverified.
Another island is a better fit if you want one resort that bundles everything under a single roof. Choosing between the two Perhentian islands is its own decision, and our guide on choosing a base on Perhentian Besar or Kecil walks through it.
How do you get to Perhentian Besar?
The islands are in Besut District, Terengganu, and boats leave mainly from Kuala Besut [1]. Earliest speedboats run at about 07:00 to 08:00, and the last at about 17:00 to 17:30 [3]. Check the schedule for your date, because it can change.
Kota Bharu is the closer airport, and Kuala Terengganu is the alternative. Our guide to the Kuala Besut jetty and boat drop-off explains the last stretch. A late flight and an early boat do not always fit, so plan the night before.
When does Perhentian Besar close for the monsoon?
Heavy monsoon weather arrives from about November to February, and most of the islands are essentially closed to tourists then [4]. In practice, most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by resort and year, and nobody can promise the weather.
Ask your stay for its season dates in writing. Our Perhentian season guide explains how to read them.
What fees should you expect?
The islands are a gazetted marine park, and fishing is not allowed within two nautical miles [7]. The park fee is reported as RM30 for a foreign adult and RM15 for a child [5]. MyKad holders pay RM5 for an adult and RM2 for a child [5].
Besut district council was also reported to add RM5 per visitor from 2022, and its current status is unknown [6]. Ask whether these are inside your quotation. Our guide on marine park fees, included or paid on arrival shows what to look for.
Which stays are on Perhentian Besar?
Research lists a few stays, and the official site is confirmed for only one.
- Perhentian Island Resort at Teluk Pauh, with its own boat transfers and meal plans not stated on its site.
- Abdul’s Chalet Resort at Abdul’s Beach, mentioned for a beachfront restaurant by a travel blog.
- Suhaila Palace and Cozy Chalet at Tuna Bay, and Coral View Island Resort near Teluk Pauh.
Treat the blog mentions as leads, not confirmations. Ask each stay for room types, meal plans and transfers in writing.
What should you ask before you book?
Send the same questions to each stay:
- Which jetty, which boat and what time on my date?
- Is the transfer and the marine park fee in the quotation?
- Which meals are included, and is there a kitchen or a cafe nearby?
- How far is my room from the beach and from the jetty?
- What are your season dates, and what happens if the boat cannot sail?
The more exactly you describe your group, the more exact the answer.
Common questions
Is Perhentian Besar good for a first island trip?
It can be, if you are comfortable with a speedboat of about 40 minutes from Kuala Besut and a mix of chalets and resorts. Some stays arrange everything for you and some leave more to you. Ask each place about meals, boat pick-up and whether your room is close to the beach you want.
Is Perhentian Besar open during the monsoon?
Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Research reports that most of the islands are essentially closed to tourists in the heaviest months. Ask your stay for its season dates in writing.
Do I pay a marine park fee on Perhentian Besar?
Yes, the islands sit inside a marine park, and Malaysians are reported to pay a lower rate than foreign visitors. The amounts come from secondary sources, and a council charge was reported in 2022. Ask whether the fee is inside your package, then confirm the current amount with the operator.
Which jetty do I use for Perhentian Besar?
Boats leave from Kuala Besut in Terengganu. Your resort or agent may run its own transfer or book you on a shared speedboat, so ask which one your booking uses and when it leaves on your date. Kota Bharu is the closer airport, and the road leg takes about an hour.
