Redang or Perhentian Kecil on a mid-range budget
You have a middle budget and want to know what you actually pay for beyond the room.
On a mid-range budget, Redang suits you if you want one resort price that bundles most things. Perhentian Kecil suits you if you like choosing your own chalet and meals. Compare the lines beyond the room, not the headline price.
Our guide to how to choose a Malaysian island covers the wider decision. For each island, see the Pulau Redang guide and the Perhentian Kecil guide.
How do the two islands compare side by side?
The table uses figures from the research we checked. Where we have no confirmed answer, it says to ask.
| Redang | Perhentian Kecil | |
|---|---|---|
| Jetty and boat | Merang, about 45 minutes [1] | Kuala Besut, about 35 to 45 minutes to Perhentian [2] |
| Boat fare | Ask, often in the package | Reported RM70 return per adult, blog, date unknown [3] |
| Park fee | RM5 per adult with MyKad, RM30 without [4] | Same amounts, plus a council charge reported in 2022 [5] |
| Stay style | Resorts across several bays [6] | Chalets and small resorts, with only two properties verified in our research [7] |
| Meals | Differs by resort, ask | Differs by chalet, ask |
| Monsoon | Most resorts close, roughly Oct to Mar [8] | Heavy monsoon Nov to Feb, most islands closed to tourists [9] |
Treat the fees as secondary figures and confirm them with the operator.
What do you pay beyond the room?
Think of the room rate as the start of the bill. Four lines follow.
- The boat, both ways, for two or more people.
- The marine park fee, and any council charge.
- Meals not covered by the room price.
- Snorkel trips, equipment and extras.
On Redang these often sit inside a resort package. On Kecil they may be bought one by one. Neither is cheaper by default, because a bundle can include things you do not use.
How does the arithmetic work?
Here is how each line scales.
If a Kecil chalet room costs less per night than a Redang resort room, three nights multiply that saving by three. Then add what the resort bundles. Two adults eating three meals a day multiply a meal price by six, which is eighteen meals over three days.
Set the room saving against the meal total for your own quotes. If the two are close, the boat and fees decide the result, and the picture can flip. That is why you total every line.
Try your own numbers in the island trip cost calculator.
Which island has more choice of stay?
Redang has resorts across several bays, with Pasir Panjang the largest beach [6]. Kecil has chalets and small resorts, though our research verified only two properties, so we cannot list the rest [7].
For Redang, see how the tiers from 3-star to 5-star differ. For Kecil, see budget chalets versus mid-range resorts.
How do you read the two quotations together?
Lay the two quotations side by side and work down the same list.
- Write the room rate per night and the number of nights.
- List the meals each quote includes, day by day.
- Add the boat for every person, both ways, and note who pays.
- Add the park fee and any council charge.
- Add the trips and equipment you want, and mark which are extra.
Then compare the totals. If one quote leaves a line empty, put your best estimate in that box before you decide, because an empty line is a cost you have not met yet. Keep the sheet, so you can update it when a provider revises its quote.
A better fit if…
Redang may be a better fit if:
- you want one price that covers most things.
- you prefer a quiet resort evening.
Perhentian Kecil may be a better fit if:
- you like choosing your own chalet and where to eat.
- you are happy to total several lines yourself.

Common questions
Which island is cheaper on a mid-range budget, Redang or Perhentian Kecil?
We cannot say without quotations, because room type, meals, boat and dates change the total more than the island name. Redang is resort-led and Kecil is chalet-led, so the lines you pay for beyond the room differ. Compare two written quotations line by line.
What do I pay beyond the room rate?
The boat, the marine park fee, meals not in the package and snorkel trips are the usual lines. A fee is reported at RM5 per adult with MyKad and RM30 without. Ask each provider to list what the price includes.
Is a chalet always cheaper than a resort?
Not always. A chalet room may be priced lower, but if meals and transfers are bought separately the gap can close. A resort may bundle them. Total the trip for both with the same list of inclusions.
Do both islands close for the monsoon?
Yes, most resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by place and year, so ask each provider for its dates in writing.
