Is Perhentian Kecil right for you?

You want a livelier island with simple stays and need to know what that means for your group.

Pulau Perhentian Kecil is the smaller Perhentian island. You reach it by the same Kuala Besut speedboats as the rest of the group, with a crossing of about 35 to 45 minutes [1].

It tends to suit friends, couples and solo travellers who like a simple stay and a social beach. It suits you less if you need a quiet resort with every meal and transfer arranged.

Our guide to choosing a Malaysian island sets out the wider choice, and the island cost calculator helps with the sums.

Who is Perhentian Kecil a better fit for?

Kecil is a better fit if you like a lively beach, short walks between places and a plain room. Backpackers, friends and couples on a modest budget may look here first. A family or a group of grandparents may prefer to compare it with the larger island, and our page on Perhentian Besar helps.

Research names Long Beach, Coral Bay (also called Senja Bay) and the fishing village as areas. Teluk Keke and Mira Beach appear in some sources but are unverified. Noise, music and walking distance differ by area, and our guide on quiet and social bases on Kecil explains the trade.

How do you get to Perhentian Kecil?

Boats leave from Kuala Besut in Terengganu, and the earliest speedboats run at about 07:00 to 08:00 with the last at about 17:00 to 17:30 [2]. Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu are the two airports in the research. Neither has an airstrip on the islands.

Moving between the islands is another leg. A taxi boat from Besar to Kecil was reported at about RM20 by one blogger, so check the figure with your stay [5]. Our guide on the Kuala Besut jetty and drop-off covers the first leg.

When is Perhentian Kecil open?

Heavy monsoon weather arrives from about November to February, and most of the islands are essentially closed to tourists then. A daily boat still serves the Kecil fishing village [3]. That boat is for residents, not a sign that stays are open.

In practice, most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by stay and year, so ask for them in writing. Our Perhentian season guide explains how.

What fees apply?

The marine park fee is reported as RM30 for a foreign adult and RM15 for a child [4]. MyKad holders pay RM5 for an adult and RM2 for a child [4].

These come from secondary sources, so confirm them with your stay or the operator. Ask whether the fee is paid at the jetty or sits inside your quotation.

Which stays are on Perhentian Kecil?

Research could verify only two stays, and the wider list of Long Beach and Coral Bay places is still unknown [6].

  • Ombak Resort at Coral Bay, which a blog places a short walk from Long Beach.
  • Alunan Resort, mentioned in a blog without saying which island or beach.

Treat both as leads. We can help you ask for current room types, meals and transfers before you compare.

What should you ask before you book?

  • Which beach is the room on, and how far is it from the jetty and the main food area?
  • Is there music or a bar nearby at night?
  • Is the boat from Kuala Besut included, and what time does it leave?
  • Which meals are included, and where do you eat the others?
  • What are your season dates, and what happens if the boat cannot sail?

Answers in writing make the comparison fair.

Send us your dates, group and the kind of evening you want, and we will help you ask Kecil stays about noise, distance and boats before you pay a deposit.

Common questions

Is Perhentian Kecil good for families?

It can suit a family that is happy with simple stays and some walking, but we have no confirmed child policies or room details for Kecil. Ask each place about room types, cots, extra beds, meals and how far the room is from the beach. A written answer is better than a verbal one.

How do I get to Perhentian Kecil?

Speedboats leave from Kuala Besut, and the crossing to the Perhentian islands takes about 35 to 45 minutes. Your stay may include the transfer or leave you to buy a ticket. Ask which jetty counter or boat your booking uses, and what time the boat leaves on your date.

Can I travel between Besar and Kecil?

A taxi boat links the two islands, and one blogger reported about RM20, so treat that figure as unconfirmed. Ask your stay whether the hop is included, what it costs and when the last boat runs. Weather and tide can change the schedule on the day.

Is Kecil open in the monsoon?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary. Research reports that a daily boat still serves the Kecil fishing village in the heaviest months, which does not mean tourist stays are open. Ask for season dates in writing.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
