How much does an island holiday cost in Malaysia?

You worry the total will surprise you and want to see where the money goes first.

An island holiday in Malaysia has no single price, because the total is five layers added together: the stay, the meals, the transport, the fees and the extras. We do not quote package prices here, since they change with dates and room type. What we can do is show you each layer, so you add them with your own numbers.

Start by listing the layers in the table below, then use our island trip cost calculator to add them up.

What are the five cost layers?

LayerWhat it coversWhat to ask
StayRoom, nights, room type and number of roomsIs the rate per room or per person?
MealsFull board, half board or room onlyWhich meals are included each day?
TransportRoad or flight, jetty parking, boatIs the boat in the package?
FeesMarine park fee, any local chargeIs it included or paid at the jetty?
ExtrasSnorkel trip, tea breaks, pickupWhat is extra?

Fill in each row from your written quotation, then add the rows. If a row is blank, the quotation is not complete yet.

Which layers move the total most?

For most groups, the stay and the meal plan move the total most, followed by the travel dates. The same room can cost more in a school holiday or on a long weekend. That is a peak surcharge, an extra amount added on school holidays, public holidays and festive weekends.

Read about peak season surcharges on island packages to see how that line appears on a quotation. For a worked structure, see the Redang holiday budget for two adults and the family of four island budget.

What fees should you expect?

A marine park conservation fee is a per-person fee for entering a protected marine park, usually paid at the jetty or through the resort. It is reported as RM30 for an adult and RM15 for a child aged 6 to 12 without a MyKad [1]. With a MyKad, it is RM5 for an adult and RM2 for a child [1].

On Perhentian, an extra RM5 per visitor from the Besut district council was reported in 2022, and its current status is unknown [2]. These amounts come from secondary sources, so confirm them with the operator. Our guide to marine park fees, included or paid on arrival explains how to read the line.

What about boat tickets and travel?

Some packages include the boat and some sell it separately. A blogger reported a Perhentian speedboat ticket of RM35 one way and RM70 return, with the date unknown [3]. For Tioman, one guide lists a ferry fare of RM60 for an adult and RM55 for a child each way, though listings are dated and inconsistent [4].

Treat these as examples of a line to ask about, not a price to plan around. Our guide on jetty fees and boat tickets in a package shows what to check.

Which extras do people forget?

Small items add up. The common ones are:

  • The road or flight to the jetty.
  • Parking at the jetty.
  • Airport or jetty pickup.
  • A night near the jetty before an early boat.
  • Snorkel gear and extra outings.

Tea breaks and snacks are another line. Read what is usually extra for tea, coffee and snacks before you assume a meal plan covers them.

How do you add it up with your own numbers?

Take one written quotation and fill the worksheet row by row. Add the cost of getting to the jetty, then add a buffer for things that come up. Divide by the number of people only after the total is complete.

Remember the season: most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, so your dates may limit the choice [5]. When your quotation arrives, read an island quotation line by line to check it is complete.

Send us your dates, group and budget range on WhatsApp, and we will help you turn them into a clear request so the quotation you receive can be added up line by line.

Common questions

Why can't you give me one price for an island holiday?

Price depends on the island, resort, room type, meal plan, dates, group size and boat. A single number would mislead you. Instead we show the cost lines and let you add them with a real quotation, using the cost calculator, so the total is yours and not a guess.

Which cost line changes the total most?

For most groups it is the stay and the meal plan, followed by travel dates. School holidays and long weekends can add a surcharge. Ask how many nights, which room, and which meals are included before you compare totals.

Are marine park fees included in the package?

It depends on the package. Some resorts include the fee and some ask you to pay at the jetty, so ask which applies. Reported amounts differ for Malaysians with a MyKad and for others, and they come from secondary sources, so confirm with the operator.

What costs do people forget?

Common ones are the road or flight to the jetty, parking at the jetty, airport or jetty pickup, tea breaks and snacks, snorkel gear and a night near the jetty. Add a small buffer for things that come up. Our worksheet below lists them.
