Merang boat cost in a Redang package
You are reading a Redang quote and want to know what the Merang boat adds.
The Merang boat to Redang is a small line with a big effect on whether two quotes can be compared. If one quote includes it both ways and another leaves it out, the cheaper-looking quote may not be cheaper. Itemise the route in five legs and multiply by your group.
Our Pulau Redang guide covers the island. For the full trip, see the Redang holiday budget for two adults.
What are the five legs of the Merang route?
Each leg can be in or out of the quote. Ask about all five.
| Leg | What it is | Ask |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Road to Merang | Fuel, toll, coach or taxi | How do we get to the jetty? |
| 2. Parking | Car park at the jetty for your nights away | Where, and is there a fee? |
| 3. Boat out | Speedboat to Redang, about 45 minutes [1] | Which departure time? |
| 4. Boat back | The same crossing in return | Is the return fare included? |
| 5. Extras | Luggage, late arrival, jetty fee | Who pays, and when? |
The same jetty also serves Lang Tengah, with a speedboat of about 45 minutes [3]. Check that your booking names the right island.
How does the boat change the true price?
Compare two quotes for the same room. Quote A includes the boat both ways. Quote B leaves it out.
The formula is: fare per person, times travellers, times two directions. For two adults the multiplier is four, because two people each cross twice. Whatever the fare is, a boat left out of quote B hides four times that fare.
So quote B is only cheaper if its saving is larger than four times the fare. Put the fare from your own quote into that sum.
What if you take the other ferry?
A scheduled ferry from Kuala Terengganu takes about 1.5 to 2 hours [2], against about 45 minutes from Merang. A longer crossing costs time, and time may cost a night or a rushed morning.
Compare the total including the road leg, not only the fare. Our guide to the alternative jetty at Shahbandar Kuala Terengganu explains when it can make sense.
What should you ask for in writing?
- Is the boat included in the package, and in which directions?
- Which jetty and which departure time does my booking use?
- Is the fare for everyone in my group, including children?
- Is there a charge for luggage, or for a late arrival?
- What is the return boat time, and how does it match check-out?
Our checklist on which legs count when a boat transfer is included lists wording to look for. For the arrival itself, see how arrival works at Merang jetty.
What about parking and the night before?
Parking is the leg people forget. Ask whether the car park is free and secure for your nights away. Our guide on jetty parking fees and who pays covers the common wording.
If your boat leaves early and you are driving from far, consider the night before. Our note on an overnight in Merang before Redang shows when it is worth the extra cost.
A better fit if…
This breakdown suits you if you are comparing Redang quotes and one is clearly cheaper than the others. It also suits you if you are driving and want to plan the jetty day. Another page may suit you better if you need a total for the whole trip, so read the budget guide above and try the island trip cost calculator.
Common questions
How much does the Merang boat to Redang cost?
The sources we checked give the crossing time but no confirmed fare, so we will not quote a number. Ask for the fare per person each way, then multiply by travellers and directions. If the transfer is in the package, ask the agent to say so in writing.
Is the Merang boat included in a Redang package?
Some Redang packages include a boat transfer, but the legs covered differ. Some cover both directions and some cover one. Ask which directions, which jetty, and whether the fare is for everyone in your group.
How long is the crossing from Merang?
The speedboat from Merang to Redang is about 45 minutes, and other guides say 40 to 50 minutes. The scheduled ferry from Kuala Terengganu takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Ask which one your booking uses.
What if my boat time does not match my check-out time?
Boat times and check-out times are set separately, so there can be a gap. Ask the resort what guests do while waiting, and whether luggage storage is available. Confirm the return boat time in writing.
