Spotting missing items in a package quote
The package looks complete but you suspect something has been left out.
Most gaps in a package quote are not tricks. They are items nobody wrote down because each side assumed the other had covered it. The surest way to find them is to walk through your trip day by day.
Start when you leave home and end when you get back. At each step ask: who provides this, and is it in the price?
This guide builds on reading an island quotation line by line. For the wider decision about what a good package contains, see how to choose an island package.
How do you walk through the trip to find gaps?
Use this order and answer each point with “in the quote”, “not in the quote” or “not sure”:
- Getting to the jetty: parking, taxi or coach.
- The boat to the island, and the boat back.
- Fees paid at the jetty or on arrival.
- Check-in time and what happens if you arrive early.
- Each meal on each day, including the first and last.
- Activities: snorkel trips, gear, guides.
- Check-out day and the boat home.
Any “not sure” becomes a question. Our resort inclusion comparator can hold two quotes side by side while you do this.
Which items are described too vaguely?
Some words in a quote sound clear but leave room for doubt:
| Wording in the quote | The question that makes it clear |
|---|---|
| “Boat transfer” | Which jetty, which direction, and is the return included? |
| “Full board” | Which three meals, and are drinks included? |
| “Snorkelling trip” | How long, how many stops, and is gear provided? |
| “Park fees” | Which fee, for whom, and paid by whom? |
| “Per person” | Based on how many sharing a room? |
Full board should mean your main meals are included (check exactly which ones). Our guide on whether full board includes drinks goes deeper on the second row.
What does an item outside the package look like in practice?
Take Semporna in Sabah as an example. One operator page puts the road from Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty at about 75 minutes by van [1]. It then lists a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort [1].
The same page notes that the Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians is not included in some packages [1]. That page is a single operator’s listing and carries low confidence, so confirm any figure with your own seller.
The point is not the amount. It is that a small fee can sit outside the headline price, so the question “which fees are paid separately, and how much?” belongs on every list. Our guide on Semporna package inclusions covers permits, dives and meals for that area.
Who in the group might be missed by the quote?
Quotes are often written for two adults sharing a room. Check how the numbers change when your group is different:
- A single traveller: is there a single supplement?
- A child: is there an age band, an extra-bed fee or a meal charge?
- A grandparent: is there a boat boarding or stairs issue to ask about?
- A group of friends: does “shared departure” mean you wait for others?
Our guide on what shared departure means in a quote explains the last point.
A better fit if…
A day-by-day check suits you if:
- you have a quote but cannot say what a normal day will cost.
- the package name sounds complete but the list under it is short.
- you are travelling with someone who has different needs.
Comparing with a second quote may suit you better if you have two near-identical quotes and want to see only the differences.
What should you do next?
Write your seven steps on a note, mark each one, and send every “not sure” to the seller in a single message. Ask for the reply as one list of inclusions and one list of exclusions. When the answers are in, run your total through the island trip cost calculator with the extras added.
Common questions
What is most often missing from an island package quote?
Boat transfers in one direction, the marine park or jetty fee, drinks with meals, snorkel gear, and extra charges for children or single travellers are common gaps. The only way to know for your quote is to ask for each in writing.
How can I check a quote without comparing it to another?
Walk through your trip day by day, from leaving home to getting back. At each step ask who provides it and whether it is in the quote. Any step where the answer is "I am not sure" is a gap to close.
Is "package" the same as "everything included"?
No. A package bundles some items at one price, and the list of what is bundled is the important part. Ask for the inclusions and exclusions as two lists, not one sentence.
Should I ask about items I may not use?
Yes, briefly. Knowing that snorkel gear or a boat outing is optional, and what it costs, helps you decide before you arrive and the choice is made for you on the spot.
