Name changes and date changes after booking

Your plans changed after you booked and you want to know what is still possible.

Changes after booking depend on the seller’s own terms, so the first step is to read what you accepted and ask what is allowed. A name change and a date change are different requests with different costs, so ask for each separately. Write down the answer and the date you received it.

This guide follows cancellation and refund questions and sits within our island booking checklist.

What should you ask about a name change?

Ask these in one message:

  1. Is a name change allowed after booking?
  2. By what date, and is there a fee?
  3. Does the new traveller change the price, for example child to adult?
  4. Does the new traveller change any fee line, such as a park fee?
  5. Will the confirmation be reissued in the new name?

On the fee line, one report gives different marine park amounts for Malaysians and for foreigners at Perhentian, RM5 and RM30 respectively [1]. That is a 2022 news report, so confirm the current amounts, but it shows why the traveller’s status can matter. If a replacement is not a MyKad holder, ask whether the fee changes.

What should you ask about a date change?

A date change can alter the rate even when the room stays the same. Ask:

  • Can I move to a new date, and by when must I ask?
  • What is the new total for the new dates?
  • Is there a change fee, and is it separate from any rate difference?
  • Does the deposit carry over in full?
  • Is this treated as a change or a cancellation and a new booking?

Peak dates cost more. One source reports the 2026 second school term break as 28 August to 5 September for some states and 29 August to 6 September for others [2]. Sources disagree on some groups, so check your own state’s schedule when choosing a new date.

Which dates need extra care?

Consider the monsoon. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon.

MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 season to start on 13 November 2025 and run to March 2026 [3]. A new date near that window may fall in a closure, so ask for the season dates in writing.

If a trip moves into school holidays, rooms and boat seats may already be taken. Ask for the new dates to be confirmed before you pay any difference. Our guide on the best time to visit Malaysian islands explains the seasons.

How do you handle a group booking?

Group bookings add a layer. One person may hold the booking and the others may have paid them.

Ask the seller who can request a change, and whether everyone must agree. Our guide on group booking policies covers deposits, names and changes, and deposit transfers versus refunds covers what happens to the money.

A better fit if…

Asking early suits you if:

  • your plans are uncertain but the booking is made.
  • a traveller may drop out and be replaced.
  • your new dates fall in school holidays or near the monsoon.

If your plans are firm, keep the seller’s terms in your folder in case they change later.

What should you do next?

Send the name or date change request in writing, with the booking details. Wait for the new terms, check the total and only then agree.

Keep the reply with your quote and receipt. If you cannot travel at all, read our guide on documenting a cancellation for insurance claims.

Tell us what you booked, what has changed and your new dates, and we will help you write the change request and list the questions the seller should answer.

Common questions

Can I change the name on an island booking?

Sometimes. Ask whether a name change is allowed, by what deadline, and whether there is a fee. Also ask whether the new traveller changes any fee line, such as a park fee that depends on whether you hold a MyKad. Get the answer in writing.

Can I move my booking to another date?

Ask whether dates can move, by when and at what cost. The new date may have a different rate, particularly in school holidays or near the monsoon closure. Ask for the new total in writing before agreeing.

Is changing dates the same as cancelling?

Not always. Some sellers treat a date change as a change, others as a cancellation and a new booking, which can mean a different refund rule. Ask which applies and how the deposit is treated.

What if the seller refuses a change?

Ask for the reason and the terms you accepted, then check them. If you can no longer travel, ask whether the room can be resold or credited. Keep the messages. Our consumer protection guide explains other steps.
