How to describe your party and child ages

You are about to ask for a quote and are not sure how to describe your family clearly.

Describe your party as a short list: how many adults, how many children with their exact ages on the travel date, any infants, and anyone with special needs. With those details in the first message, an agency can answer with a correct quote the first time, instead of asking five follow-up questions.

Ages matter more on islands than most people expect. This page gives you a template and explains why. Use it with our guide on what details to send for an accurate quotation and the island booking checklist.

Why do exact ages change the price?

Many charges follow age bands, not a simple adult or child label. The marine park fee on Redang is reported at RM30 for an adult and RM15 for a child aged 6 to 12 without a MyKad [1].

With a MyKad the reported amounts are RM5 and RM2 [1]. A child of five and a child of six can fall on opposite sides of a band.

Resorts also set their own rules for infants, extra beds and children sharing a room. If you give only the word child, the agency has to guess, and a guess can leave a line off your quote.

What does the template look like?

Copy this and fill it in:

  • Dates: arrive __, leave __ (flexible by __ days if you like).
  • People: __ adults (include anyone aged 60 or above), __ children with ages on the first travel day (__, __), and __ infants under two.
  • Starting point: __.

Then the practical details:

  • Rooms: share or separate, and who sleeps together.
  • Special needs: cannot swim, uses a stick, allergies, prayer needs.
  • Must-haves: for example halal meals, a quiet room, air conditioning.
  • Budget range: __ to __ per person.

Keep it as a list. A list is easier to answer line by line than a paragraph.

How do you handle awkward cases?

Toddlers and babies: give the age in months if under two. Say whether they need a cot or will share a bed, and whether you want baby food or a fridge.

Teenagers: mention the age, because a fourteen-year-old may count as an adult for a bed or a fee, and a twelve-year-old may not.

Grandparents: say the age if they are 60 or above, since senior rates exist for some fees. Add any need for steps, handrails or short walks.

Mixed swimming ability: tell the agency who cannot swim. It affects the beach, boat and activities. Our guide on shore entry on Redang shows why.

What does the agency do with these details?

They use them to choose a room that fits, to count beds, to apply child and senior rates and to check boat seats. A complete message lets them reply once with a total.

An incomplete message can lead to a quote that is corrected later, and a corrected quote is a changed price. Send the template once, clean, and keep the reply as your reference for the booking.

What should you ask in return?

  • What are your child, infant and senior rules and rates?
  • Does each child need an extra bed, and what does it cost?
  • Which fees are by age, such as park fees, and are they in the price?
  • Can all of us fit in one room or do we need two?
  • Is there a family room, and does it sleep our exact group?

Read the answer against the resort inclusion comparator, and use the cost calculator with your real numbers.

A better fit if…

The full template may be a better fit if you are travelling with children, grandparents or anyone with special needs.

A shorter message may be a better fit if you are two adults with simple needs. Even then, give dates and a budget range, so the reply fits you the first time.

Copy the template, fill in your people and ages, and send it to us on WhatsApp, and we will help you check it before it goes to an agency or resort.

Common questions

Why do child ages matter for an island quote?

Prices, beds and fees are set by age bands. For example, the marine park fee is reported with a lower rate for children aged six to twelve, and resorts set their own child and infant rules. A vague age can change your total.

Should I give birth dates or ages?

Give the age on the day you travel and, if a child turns a new age during the trip, say so. Exact birth dates are usually not needed, and you should not send identity numbers in a first message.

Do babies and toddlers count in the party size?

Yes, always mention them, even if you expect them to travel free. Beds, cots, boat seats and meal rules can differ, and a resort may count them differently.

What if someone in the group has mobility or swimming needs?

Say so in the first message. It affects room position, boat boarding and activities. Write the need plainly, such as cannot swim or uses a stick, and ask what the stay can do.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
