Koh Lipe or Perhentian Kecil for backpackers?

You travel light and cheap with friends, and want to know which island fits that style.

Perhentian Kecil is the lighter choice for a Malaysian backpacker group, because it needs no passport and one short boat. Koh Lipe may suit you if the idea of a Thai island is part of the trip. We found no Koh Lipe prices, so the honest comparison is season, transfers and paperwork, with a sheet for the money.

How do the two compare for a backpacker trip?

This table uses sourced figures only. A blank means we have nothing reliable.

What do the boats cost a group?

One blogger reported a speedboat ticket of RM35 one way and RM70 return to Perhentian, with a marine park fee of RM30 paid before boarding at the foreigner rate [5]. The date of that figure is unknown, and Malaysians may pay a different rate. A taxi boat between Besar and Kecil was reported at about RM20 [6].

Treat these as a rough guide for where to look, then ask the operator for the current price. Our guide on moving between Perhentian Besar and Kecil covers that hop.

How do you split costs fairly in a friend group?

Do the sums per person, not per room. Write these lines for each island:

  1. Return transport from your home to the jetty or Langkawi, per person.
  2. Boat or ferry, both directions, per person.
  3. Room share, divided by the number sharing.
  4. Daily food and water, per person, from the prices you are quoted.
  5. A spare night in case a boat does not sail.

Add the five lines and divide by nights. The island trip cost calculator does the maths, and our note on how large a friend group suits one boat helps if the group is large.

A better fit if…

Perhentian Kecil may be a better fit if:

  • you want the shortest route and the fewest forms.
  • your group has mixed passport validity or uncertain dates.
  • you would rather keep a spare day for the beach.

Koh Lipe may be a better fit if:

  • everyone has a valid passport and can match the dates.
  • crossing a border is part of the appeal.
  • you are happy to book in the ferry season and plan the extra legs.

What should you ask both islands?

  • What is the full price per person for my nights, including the boat?
  • Which meals and drinks are included, if any?
  • What are your closed or rough-sea dates, in writing?
  • What happens if the boat does not sail on my departure day?
  • Is there a curfew or shared room rule for a group?

Send us your dates, group size and a rough budget per person, and we will help you ask both islands for the same costs so the split is easy to read.

Common questions

Which island is cheaper for a backpacker group?

Research found no Koh Lipe prices and only two verified Perhentian Kecil properties. Ask both for written quotes for the same nights and room type, then split them per person. Add transfers, because the boat can change the picture more than the bed.

Do both islands close for part of the year?

Yes. Direct Langkawi to Koh Lipe ferries run roughly from mid or late October to the end of May. Perhentian has a heavy monsoon from November to February, when most of it is closed to tourists. Ask each operator for its dates in writing.

Is Perhentian Kecil easier to reach?

For a Malaysian traveller, usually fewer steps: a speedboat of about 35 to 45 minutes from Kuala Besut, and no passport. Koh Lipe adds a Langkawi leg, a ferry and Thai immigration. Easier does not mean better, so weigh it against the style you want.

What happens if my friends are on different passports or dates?

Check every person's passport validity before anyone pays for Koh Lipe, because the ferry needs passports for all. For Perhentian Kecil only the boat times matter. Agree one fixed set of dates first, and book the transfer together if you can.
