Rawa or Sibu for a short stay?

You have one or two nights and a tight budget, so the boat and sea matter.

For a short stay, choose the island whose boat time you can confirm in writing. Rawa has that on record: its resort states about 20 minutes by speedboat and confirms the transfer time before arrival. For Sibu, research found no confirmed boat time, stay or fee, so you start with questions.

On a two-night trip, one cancelled or delayed boat can remove half your holiday. Our guide to choosing a Johor island shows how the jetty shapes the plan, and the jetty connection planner adds your real start point.

How do the two islands compare for a short stay?

RawaSibu
BoatResort speedboat 20 to 30 minutes, ferry about 1 hour [1]Not confirmed in research
Resort statementAbout 20 minutes, transfer time confirmed before arrival [2]Ask the operator
Tide or sea limitsFerry reported as tide dependent [1]Ask the operator
MealsThree buffet meals daily, compulsory [3]Ask the operator
Marine park feeReported RM5 Malaysian adult, RM30 non-Malaysian [4]Not confirmed

The fee figure is a dated, low confidence source, so confirm it before you budget.

How does a short stay run hour by hour?

A two-night stay has about 48 hours. Boat times take the first and the last few. Check arrival day: when does the boat leave the jetty, and when can you check in? Then check departure day: when must you check out, and when is the last boat?

Our plan for a 2-day Rawa trip from Mersing shows a full timeline. The practical implication: ask for the boat times before you ask for the price.

How do jetty and sea state change the plan?

If your departure is the Mersing side, the Rawa transfer is the one we can confirm. If you are told another jetty applies, such as Tanjung Leman, ask why; our guide on when Tanjung Leman beats Mersing explains the cases.

A rough sea can cancel a boat. Read our notes on what to ask about cancelled boat transfers before you pay a deposit.

A better fit if…

Rawa may be a better fit if:

  • you want a confirmed boat time and compulsory board in one price.
  • you are coming from the south and want a simple two-night plan.

Sibu may be a better fit if:

  • you are happy to ask and wait for written answers.
  • you have a flexible schedule that can absorb a delayed boat.

Another island is a better fit if you cannot lose a single day to a boat delay. Our guide on short-stay island trips for school holidays looks at other options.

When is the season?

A short stay leaves no slack for a closed season. Most east-coast resorts close roughly November to February or March [5], so confirm that both of your nights fall inside the open dates.

Questions for a timing check

  • What time is the boat on my arrival day, and when can I check in?
  • What time is the last boat on my departure day?
  • Does the boat depend on the tide or the sea state?
  • What happens if the boat cannot sail, and who do I call first?
  • Is the park fee in the quotation?

Send the same list to both operators. The cost calculator helps you add the boat and the fee to the package so the short stay is priced fairly.

Tell us your arrival jetty, your two dates and your budget, and we will help you ask a Rawa and a Sibu operator for the same boat times and sea-state rules.

Common questions

Which island is better for a two-night stay, Rawa or Sibu?

Rawa is easier to plan, because its resort states a transfer time of about 20 minutes and compulsory board. For Sibu, research found no confirmed boat time, stay or fee. Ask each operator for the boat time on your arrival and departure days before you compare prices.

What does tide-dependent mean for a short trip?

The public ferry to Rawa is reported as tide dependent, so departure times can shift from day to day. On a short trip, that can cost you half a day. Ask for the boat time on your dates, and plan the first and last day around it.

Does rough sea cancel the boat?

It can. Nobody can promise a calm crossing, and a cancelled boat on a two-night trip hurts more than on a week-long one. Ask what the operator does if the boat cannot sail, whether the money is refunded or rebooked, and who you should call first.

Are both islands open in the monsoon?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask in writing for the season dates, and for the rule if the boat cannot sail.
