Pulau Besar or Pulau Tinggi for friends?

You are organising a friends trip and need an island that can sleep, feed and entertain everyone.

For a friends trip, the island that matters is the one that can confirm group rooms and activities in writing. Research did not confirm either for Pulau Besar or Pulau Tinggi, so neither wins on paper. What we can say is that Besar has a reported 30-minute resort speedboat that runs at high tide only, and Tinggi has a reported 30-minute speedboat from Tanjung Leman.

Do not mix this Pulau Besar up with Perhentian Besar in Terengganu. Our guide to Mersing island hopping shows how the three Mersing islands fit together, and the Pulau Besar guide and the Pulau Tinggi guide list what we found.

How do the two islands compare for a group?

Pulau BesarPulau Tinggi
BoatResort speedboat about 30 minutes, high tide only [1]Speedboat about 30 minutes from Tanjung Leman, ferry about 45 minutes [2]

Marine park feeReported RM5 Malaysian adult, RM30 non-Malaysian [3]Same schedule reported, low confidence

Empty cells are questions for the operator. The fee figure is a dated, low confidence source, so confirm it.

What should the organiser ask about rooms?

A group of friends needs room types that match how you want to sleep. Ask whether the stay offers twin rooms, triple rooms, family rooms or a dorm, and whether you can mix them. Our guide on room splits for friends shows how each option changes the price per person.

Ask also about noise. A group that stays up late needs to know whether neighbouring rooms are occupied, and whether the resort has quiet hours. The practical implication: tell the operator your group’s habits so the room allocation fits.

How do you plan activities for everyone?

Not every friend wants the same day. Ask what the operator offers on land and on the water, and whether activities can be booked per person rather than per group. Our page on mixed swimming skill levels helps if your group is not equal in the water.

For boat trips, ask whether the price is per person or per boat, because a full boat shared by the group is cheaper per head. Our guide on per-person or per-boat costs explains the difference.

How do you split the costs fairly?

List shared costs, such as the boat, the room and group activities, and personal costs, such as drinks and extras. Agree the split before anyone pays a deposit, and decide who holds the money.

Our guide to island-hopping cost split for a group shows a worked method, and the cost calculator lets you test your own numbers.

A better fit if…

Pulau Besar may be a better fit if:

  • you are happy to plan around a tide-timed boat.
  • your group is small enough to fit one or two room types.

Pulau Tinggi may be a better fit if:

  • your group is flexible about dates and happy to wait for written answers.
  • you want to ask about the Tanjung Leman route, which our guide on when Tanjung Leman beats Mersing covers.

Another island is a better fit if you need a confirmed group room list before you collect money from everyone.

When is the season?

With a group, one closed week can undo months of planning. Most east-coast resorts close roughly November to February or March [4], so settle the dates with everyone only after the operator confirms they are open.

A message to send both operators

  • We are a group of friends, how many rooms and which types can you confirm?
  • What is the boat time on our arrival and departure days?
  • Which activities can be booked per person, and which per boat?
  • Is the marine park fee in the quotation?
  • What is the deposit, and what is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?

Send the same message to both and compare the replies with the resort inclusion comparator.

Tell us how many friends are going, the dates you are considering and the budget per person, and we will help you send the same group-room questions to a Pulau Besar and a Pulau Tinggi operator.

Common questions

Which island is better for a group of friends?

Research did not confirm group rooms or activity lists for either Pulau Besar or Pulau Tinggi, so neither can be called better. Send both the same message with your group size, room split and the activities you want, then compare the written replies.

How do we split costs fairly?

List the shared costs, the room, the boat and any activities, and the personal ones such as drinks and extras. Divide shared costs by headcount, or by room if rooms differ in price. Our guide on splitting island-hopping costs for a group shows an example.

Is Pulau Besar the same as Perhentian Besar?

No. Pulau Besar off Mersing is in Johor and Perhentian Besar is in Terengganu. Check the state and the jetty on every quotation, and ask the agent which one they mean if the quotation only says Besar.

Are both islands open in the monsoon?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask in writing for the season dates, and for the rule if the boat cannot sail.
