Perhentian budget for two adults: chalet or resort

You are planning for two and want to know where a chalet really saves money.

A Perhentian trip for two adults has fixed costs and flexible ones. The boat and fees are close to fixed, so the real choice between a chalet and a resort sits in the room and the food. Work out the fixed part first, then compare the rest with the same list of inclusions.

Our Perhentian Kecil island guide describes the island. When you have two quotations, the island trip cost calculator totals them side by side.

What are the fixed costs for two adults?

These costs arrive whichever stay you choose. The figures below come from secondary sources, so confirm them before you budget.

LineReported figureTwo adults
Speedboat, returnRM70 per adult, blogger figure, date unknown [1]RM140
Park fee, with MyKadRM5 per adult [2]RM10
Park fee, without MyKadRM30 per adult [2]RM60
Council charge, if still appliedRM5 per visitor, reported in 2022 [3]RM10

So the boat and fees come to roughly RM150 to RM210 for two adults, depending on the MyKad rule and the council charge. The crossing itself is reported at about 35 to 45 minutes [5]. If your resort runs its own boat, ask whether that fare is already in your package.

How is a chalet bill built?

A chalet quote is often a room rate per night. Food, transfers and activities may be separate, so ask which of them are inside the price.

Here is the arithmetic. Whatever a meal costs per person, two adults eating three meals a day multiply it by six. Over three days that is eighteen meals.

If a chalet room costs less per night than a resort room, three nights multiply that saving by three. Meals bought separately can eat much of it, so keep both numbers in view.

How is a resort package built?

A resort package usually joins the room with meals, and sometimes the boat. That makes the total easier to plan, though the room rate looks higher.

Ask for the package as a list: which meals, whether drinks count, and whether the boat is both ways. Our guide to what an island full-board package includes and excludes shows the usual gaps.

Which line moves your total most?

For three nights, the room line and the food line together decide most of the difference. The boat and fee lines stay almost still.

A chalet may suit you if you want to choose where and what you eat. A resort may suit you if you want fewer decisions. Neither is cheaper by default, and only your two quotations can show it.

What does the last leg cost?

Some stays need a short extra hop. A taxi boat from Besar to Kecil was reported at about RM20, from a blog [4]. We do not know if that is per person or per boat, so ask.

Add it to the fixed part if your quote leaves it out. Our guide to boat transfers between Besar and Kecil explains the choices.

Does the stay run its own boat?

Some stays run their own boat transfers. Perhentian Island Resort at Teluk Pauh on Besar does so [7]. A stay with its own boat can quote the transfer inside the package, which changes how you compare it with a chalet that leaves you to find a seat.

Ask every stay the same three things. Who runs the boat, which legs are included, and what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail? Write the answers beside each quote so the fixed lines above can be set against them.

What about the season?

Heavy monsoon runs from November to February, and most islands are essentially closed to tourists then [6]. Pick your nights inside the season and ask for the dates in writing.

A better fit if…

A chalet may be a better fit if:

  • you are comfortable booking your own meals and activities.
  • you want to adjust your spending day by day.

A resort package may be a better fit if:

  • you want one price that covers most things.
  • you prefer a set meal plan without daily decisions.

Tell us whether you lean toward a chalet or a resort and how many nights you have, and we will help you request two quotations built from the same list of inclusions.

Common questions

Is a chalet always cheaper than a resort on Perhentian?

Not always. A chalet room rate may look lower, but if food, boat transfers and snorkel trips are bought separately, the gap can close. A resort package may bundle those items. Compare the same list of inclusions for both, then total the trip.

What fixed costs do two adults pay whatever they choose?

Two adults share a boat ticket, a marine park fee and possibly a council charge. A blogger reported RM70 return per adult, though the date is unknown. Fees depend on whether you hold a MyKad. Confirm each with the operator and ask what your quote already includes.

Do I need an extra boat to reach a Kecil chalet?

It depends on where your chalet is and where the speedboat lands. A taxi boat from Besar to Kecil was reported at about RM20, from a blog. Ask whether your transfer goes to your beach or to a landing point, and who pays for the last leg.

When are the Perhentian chalets and resorts closed?

Most islands are essentially closed to tourists during the heavy monsoon from November to February. Exact dates vary by place and year. Ask each chalet or resort for its season dates in writing before you pay a deposit.
