Budget chalets or mid-range resorts on Perhentian?

You are watching your budget and want to know what a chalet saves and what a resort adds.

A budget chalet usually saves you money on the room, while a mid-range resort may add meals, transfers and facilities in one price. The honest answer is that the cheaper room is not always the cheaper trip. Meals, boats and fees can close the gap, so compare the whole cost for the same nights and the same people.

Read the Perhentian Kecil island guide first, then use this page to see what each type gives and takes away.

What does each type give and take away?

Budget chaletMid-range resort
Room rateOften lower, ask what it coversHigher, ask what it adds
MealsAsk if any are includedAsk for the meal plan in writing
BoatAsk whether it is in the priceAsk whether the resort runs its own transfer
FacilitiesAsk for bathroom, fan or air conditioning, power hoursAsk for each facility you need
InformationOften thin, few official pagesUsually more, but still ask

The word “ask” appears often because our research is thin here. It could verify only two Kecil properties [5], so we do not claim to know what a typical chalet offers.

Which costs sit outside the room rate?

On Perhentian, several lines add to a cheap room:

  • The boat from Kuala Besut, about 40 minutes to Besar [1].
  • A taxi boat from Besar to Kecil, which one blogger puts at about RM20 [2].
  • The marine park fee, which a news report gives as RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners [3].
  • Meals if the chalet does not include them.
  • Snorkelling trips and gear.

Add them up for your group before you decide. The island trip cost calculator does the sums, and our budget guide for two adults on Perhentian shows the pattern.

How do you tell a good chalet from a thin one?

Ask these five questions and note how fast and how clearly the answers come.

  1. Which beach is the chalet on, and how far is it from the boat landing?
  2. Is the bathroom inside the room, and is there hot water?
  3. Is the room air-conditioned or fan-cooled, and what are the power hours?
  4. Which meals are included, and is there a place to eat nearby?
  5. What is your cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?

A chalet that answers well may suit a budget trip very well. One that does not reply is a signal to move on.

A better fit if…

A budget chalet may be a better fit if you plan to be out most of the day and want a simple base. See the guide to Perhentian packages versus booking yourself if you are weighing the two.

A mid-range resort may be a better fit if you want meals, boat and room in one price, or you travel with children or older relatives.

Either may be a poor fit if you are on a very tight schedule, because boat times are set by the sea and the operator.

When can you go?

Heavy monsoon runs roughly November to February, and most islands are essentially closed to tourists [4]. Dates vary by place and year, so ask in writing. If budget matters, our peak weeks guide for Perhentian shows when prices and availability move.

Send us your dates, group size and a rough nightly ceiling, and we will help you ask a chalet and a resort the same questions so the real gap is clear.

Common questions

Is a chalet always cheaper than a resort on Perhentian?

The room rate may be lower, but the whole trip depends on meals, boat and fees too. A chalet with no meals can cost more once you add food at island prices. Compare the total for the same nights, meals and boats, divided by the number of guests.

What does a mid-range resort add?

It may add things such as a restaurant on site, boat transfers and set meal plans, but that depends on the resort. Ask for each in writing. Do not assume that a resort label means air conditioning, hot water or a pool. Ask for the facilities you need.

Where can I find a list of Kecil chalets?

Our research could verify only two Kecil properties, so we do not hold a full list. Ask the chalet for its beach, room type and contact, and treat unlisted places with extra care. Check that it is operating on your dates before paying.

Are chalets open in the monsoon?

Heavy monsoon runs roughly November to February, and most islands are essentially closed to tourists. Chalets differ by owner and year. Ask for opening and closing dates in writing, and ask what is refunded if the boat cannot sail.
