Self-drive or coach to the east coast?

You are weighing your own car against a coach seat and want the real cost.

The car wins on cost when enough people share it, and the coach wins when few do. The break-even group size is the car’s total cost divided by one coach fare. Fill in your own two numbers and the answer follows.

We have no confirmed fuel, toll, coach or parking prices, so this page does not state any. It gives you the rule and the questions. For the wider picture, see our guide to the true cost of getting to Kuala Besut.

What is the break-even rule?

Call the total cost of the car C: fuel, tolls and parking for the whole trip, both ways. Call one return coach fare per person F. Call the cost of reaching the jetty from the coach drop-off, for the group, T.

  1. Car cost is C.
  2. Coach cost is the number of people times F, plus T.
  3. The car is cheaper when C is less than that coach cost.

If T is small, the break-even group size is roughly C divided by F. A group larger than that favours the car. A smaller group favours the coach.

How do ratios read as group sizes?

You can read the answer from a ratio without a price. Divide C by F.

C divided by FBreak-even group sizeReading
11 personThe car is cheaper from the first seat
22 peopleA couple is about even
33 peopleA family of three or more favours the car
44 peopleOnly larger groups favour the car
66 peopleThe coach is the better value for most groups

The ratio is the same whatever the price level. If you only know that the car is “about three coach fares”, you already know the answer.

What costs are not in ringgit?

A fair comparison counts four things that a sum leaves out.

  • Driving hours: the drive to the jetty is long, and the drive home is after a boat day.
  • Fatigue: a tired driver is a risk, so consider sharing the driving.
  • Flexibility: a car can leave when your boat does, while a coach follows its own timetable.
  • Luggage: children, snorkel gear and cool boxes ride easier in a car.

Our guide on self-drive versus coach to a jetty from KL: cost and fatigue covers these in detail.

What should you do about parking?

Parking at the jetty is a real line in the car’s total. Ask where to park, whether it is guarded, how much it costs per day and whether your package covers it. See our note on jetty parking in island packages and the guide to toll, petrol and parking for a jetty weekend.

A better fit if…

Driving may suit you if you are three or more and want to leave when your boat does. A coach may suit you better if you are one or two and would rather rest on the road.

A private car with a driver may suit you better if you want door-to-door comfort for a group. See private car versus shared coach to the jetty.

What figures should you collect first?

  • Fuel for the round trip, from your own car’s usage and the distance.
  • Tolls for both directions.
  • Parking per day at the jetty.
  • One return coach fare, and the drop-off point.
  • The cost of the last leg from the drop-off to the jetty.
  • A night’s stay, if the coach arrives too late for the boat.

Tell us where you start, how many are going and when your boat leaves, and we will help you set up the comparison so the car and coach are priced on the same lines.

Common questions

Is self-drive always cheaper than the coach?

No. It depends on how many people share the car and on the cost of fuel, tolls and parking against the coach fares. For one or two people the coach is often the simpler comparison. Use the break-even rule with your own numbers.

What costs does the break-even rule leave out?

It leaves out time, fatigue and flexibility. Driving after a boat day can be tiring, and a coach timetable may not match your boat. These do not appear in a ringgit sum, so weigh them yourself.

Can I leave a car at the jetty?

Many people do, but terms differ. Ask where you can park, whether it is guarded, what it costs per day and whether the package covers it. Our guide to jetty parking explains the question.

What if the coach does not go to the jetty?

Then add a last leg by taxi or e-hailing, and check the timing against your boat. A coach that drops you in town late the night before may need an overnight, which belongs in the cost.
