Private car or shared coach to the jetty?

You are coming from far away, perhaps with parents, and need to choose how to reach the jetty.

A private car gives you door-to-jetty comfort and flexibility, a shared coach gives you a lower price on a fixed schedule, and self-drive gives you freedom if you are happy to handle parking. The right one depends on how far you are travelling, who is with you and how much luggage you carry. Ask for each option in the same format, so the choice is based on facts.

Our guide on choosing an island package covers the wider picture. The jetty connection planner lets you test how the road leg fits your boat time.

How do the three options compare?

This table gives general patterns. Your operator and route will decide the details.

If your group is large, the private car cost spreads across more people.

What should you ask about each option?

For a private car or coach, ask these:

  1. Where is the pickup point, and what time?
  2. How many seats and bags can the vehicle take?
  3. Does the driver track my flight if it is delayed?
  4. How long is the journey to the jetty, and are there stops?
  5. What is the cancellation rule?

For self-drive, also ask about the jetty parking fee, whether the lot is secure, and where to leave the car for several nights. Our guide on jetty parking fees in island packages explains who usually pays.

Which is better for older parents?

Long road legs can be tiring, so comfort and the number of changes matter most. A private car can reduce stops and let you take breaks. We cannot say any vehicle is accessible, so ask about step height, seat comfort and help with bags.

How does this connect to your boat?

The road leg must end before your boat leaves, with a buffer. A shared coach with fixed timing is usually planned around a boat, while a private car depends on the departure time you agree with the driver.

If your boat is also shared, remember that both legs are fixed. See shared speedboat schedules and your flight. Also check private versus shared pickup from the airport to the jetty.

A better fit if…

A private car is a better fit if:

  • you travel with parents, small children or a lot of luggage.
  • your flight arrives at an awkward hour.
  • your group is large enough to share the cost.

A shared coach is a better fit if:

  • you are a solo traveller or a couple on a budget.
  • the fixed schedule matches your arrival.

Self-drive is a better fit if:

  • you enjoy driving and the jetty has secure parking.

Ask for each option clearly, and choose the one that matches your day.

Tell us your arrival point, your jetty and who is travelling, and we will help you ask for private and shared prices with the same pickup details so you can compare them fairly.

Common questions

Is a private car faster than a shared coach?

Often, because it goes directly and does not wait to collect others, but the road is the same. A shared coach may stop at several pickup points. Ask the operator for the expected travel time and the number of stops for your route.

What about luggage on a shared coach?

Space can be limited, especially with large bags or strollers. Ask what the luggage allowance is and where bags are stored. A private car usually gives you more flexibility, but confirm the number of seats and bags it can carry.

Can the car wait if my flight is delayed?

Some operators track flights, and some do not. Ask how a delay is handled, whether there is a waiting fee, and whether the driver has your flight number. A shared coach has a fixed time and may leave without you.

Is self-drive a better option?

It can be, if you enjoy driving and have a good place to park. Ask about parking at the jetty, the fee, and whether it is secure. If you are tired after a flight or travelling with elderly parents, a driver may be more relaxing.
