Jetty parking fee: who pays?

You are driving to the jetty and want to know if parking is in the package.

Jetty parking is often not part of an island package, so treat it as a separate line until the quotation says otherwise. It is a small cost per night, but over a long stay it joins the toll and petrol to form the real price of driving. Ask for the answer in writing before you pay.

See this line beside the others in what a full-board package includes and excludes. To add it up with your own numbers, use the island trip cost calculator.

How can parking be handled in a package?

Four setups are common. Each has its own question.

SetupWhat it meansAsk
IncludedThe package covers parkingFor how many nights, and which car park?
ExcludedYou pay on arrival or on returnHow much, and how do I pay?
Arranged by the agencyA partner car park is booked for youIs it covered, guarded or open?
Not offeredYou park in town and take a pickupWhat time is the pickup, and what does it cost?

If the quotation does not say, assume it is excluded and ask.

How do you work out the cost?

Use this sum, and fill in the daily rate from the car park. Number of nights away, plus the day you leave and the day you return, multiplied by the rate. If you are away for three nights, count the full span of days the car stays, not only the nights on the island.

Take a Friday departure and a Monday return, so the car stays four days. At RM X a day, that is 4 times RM X. Add the toll and petrol, and the cost of driving becomes visible. Our guide on toll, petrol and parking for a jetty weekend walks through the whole sum.

What else should you ask about parking?

The price is only part of it. Ask these questions too, so your car is somewhere you are comfortable leaving.

  1. Is the car park covered, guarded or open?
  2. How many hours before the boat should I arrive?
  3. Is the fee collected at the gate, by the agency or by the boat operator?
  4. What if I return a day late because of weather?
  5. Is there a walking distance between the car park and the boat?

Ask also about luggage, because a long walk with bags and children is its own cost.

When is a mainland stay worth considering?

If the first boat leaves early, a night near the jetty can save a rushed morning. It also changes the parking sum, because the car stays at the hotel. Our guide on a mainland stay with parking while you are on the island compares the options.

A better fit if…

Driving yourself may suit you if you travel with a family, carry bulky gear or want to leave on your own schedule. A coach or pickup may suit you better if you dislike long drives or want to avoid the parking sum. Our guide on land transport inclusions compares the two.

Tell us where you are driving from and how many nights you will be away, and we will help you ask the agency for a clear parking answer before you pay.

Common questions

Is jetty parking included in island packages?

Sometimes, but do not assume it. Many packages list the boat and the room and leave parking to you. Ask whether parking is included, how many nights it covers and where the car stays.

How is parking usually charged?

It can be per night, per day, per entry or as a flat fee for the stay. The quotation or the agency should say which. Ask for the amount in ringgit and what happens if you return later than planned.

Can I leave the car somewhere else and take a pickup?

Sometimes. A few travellers park in town and take a pickup to the jetty. Ask the agency whether this is allowed, what it costs and whether the pickup time fits the first boat of the day.

What if the car park is full?

Ask in advance. Busy weekends and school holidays can fill car parks, so request a plan B in writing, such as a second car park or a pickup point away from the jetty.
