Pricing a domestic flight to an island gateway

You are comparing a flight to the nearest airport with the road and want every line counted.

A domestic flight to an island gateway is the fare plus six other lines. They are bags, seat choice, the airport-to-jetty transfer, any night before or after the boat, return travel and a buffer.

The fare alone misleads. Price all seven lines, then compare the total with the road.

Our guide on flying into Kota Bharu and going on to Kuala Besut covers the ground leg for Perhentian. The jetty connection planner checks your arrival against the boat.

What is in the seven-line flight price?

Which gateway airports did we find?

An undated guide reports that Kota Bharu is served by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport), KLIA2 and Subang [1]. It also lists Kuala Terengganu to Penang flights, with nonstop status unconfirmed [1]. Kuantan, Langkawi, Tawau, Kota Kinabalu and Senai were not researched, so check airline timetables for those.

Redang Airport is reported as a short-runway field with charters only, flown by a charter operator from Subang and Seletar [2]. Our guide to the Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang jetty covers the more common route.

How does the boat cut-off change the price?

A flight is only useful if it connects to a boat. At Kuala Besut, the earliest speedboats are reported at about 07:00 to 08:00 and the last at about 17:00 to 17:30 [3]. A flight landing after the last boat adds a night on the mainland, and that night belongs in the price.

Read checking a flight against a boat cut-off and afternoon flight, morning boat before you book. Both show how to build the day.

What does a worked comparison look like?

Compare two plans for the same group, using your own numbers.

  1. Plan A, the flight: return fare times people, plus bags, plus airport transfer, plus any night.
  2. Plan B, the road: the car or coach total from our route cost guide.
  3. Add the same boat and fees to both, since they cancel out.

The plan with the lower total wins, unless time or comfort tips it. Test for two, four and six people, since a road trip shares the cost and a flight does not.

A better fit if…

A flight may suit you if you are one or two people, your time is short and a morning flight connects to a boat. The road may suit you better if you are four or more or carry a lot of gear. If your package includes the return flight, see return flights in an island package.

What should you ask?

  • What time must I land to catch the last boat?
  • Does the package include the airport transfer?
  • What is the baggage allowance for snorkel gear?
  • What happens to my boat if the flight is delayed?

Tell us your start city, dates and the island, and we will help you check the flight times against the boat so the cheaper fare is really the cheaper trip.

Common questions

How much is a domestic flight to an island gateway?

Our research holds no confirmed fares, so we state none. Fares change by date, bag allowance and how early you book. Price the whole trip with the seven lines on this page, then compare it with the road.

Which airport is the gateway for Perhentian?

Kota Bharu is the airport reported for the Kuala Besut side, served from KLIA, KLIA2 and Subang according to an undated guide. Confirm the airlines on the current timetable, then plan the road leg to the jetty.

Can I fly straight to Redang?

Redang Airport is reported as a short-runway field with charters only, and a charter operator has flown from Subang and Seletar. Most travellers go by road to Merang. Ask your resort which option it uses.

What turns a cheap flight into an expensive trip?

A flight that lands after the last boat adds a night on the mainland, and a very early flight can add a night before it. Check the flight against the boat cut-off before booking, and price the night as part of the trip.
