Sabah island budget: when Semporna gets expensive

A Semporna quote looks higher than you expected and you want to see where the cost comes from.

Semporna becomes expensive because several moderate costs stack up: flights to Tawau, a van, a boat, jetty and park fees, the stay, and for divers a Sipadan permit. No single line explains the total. The way to lower surprise is to list every line from each quote and see which are fees, which are legs and which are the stay.

This guide gives you a fill-in table and the figures the research confirms. We do not state package prices. Use the island trip cost calculator with your own numbers, and read our guide on reading an island quotation line by line.

Where do the legs add cost?

You fly to Tawau, take a van to the Semporna jetty (about 75 minutes), then a speedboat of 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort [1]. Each leg may sit inside or outside your package. A longer transfer can also force a hotel night in Semporna.

See our guide on the Semporna islands transport cost breakdown for the legs in more detail.

Which fees are easy to miss?

The Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians or RM10 for others is reported as left out of some packages [1]. For Sipadan, the Sabah Parks page lists a conservation fee of RM50 for Malaysians or RM100 for international visitors [2]. It also lists a scuba fee of RM250 or RM350, to confirm before travel [2].

Permits are booked by operators up to six months ahead, with a 50% deposit and strict cancellation terms [3]. Ask whether the permit fee is in your price, and what you lose if you change dates.

For comparison, Malaysian adults pay RM8 a day to enter Tunku Abdul Rahman Park [5].

What can the stay line include?

Mataking Island Resort states full board of three buffet meals with coffee, tea and snacks, and a return shared boat from Semporna jetty [4]. That puts two lines inside the room price. A cheaper room with meals and a boat bought separately may cost more.

Full board means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones).

Ask every resort the same question: what is in the room price, and what is extra?

A better fit if…

A longer Semporna stay may be a better fit if:

  • the transfer cost is a big share of a short trip.
  • your quote already includes meals and boat.

The Kota Kinabalu park islands may be a better fit if:

  • you want to avoid the Tawau flight and the Semporna transfers.
  • your group would prefer a day trip.

What should you ask before you pay?

  • Which lines are in the price, and which are extra?
  • Is the Semporna jetty fee included?
  • Are park or permit fees in the price?
  • What is the deposit and cancellation rule?
  • Is the boat shared or private?

Once every line has an owner, a high quote becomes something you can read, not just feel.

Send us your quote, your group size and your dates, and we will help you break it into lines and see which ones are fees, legs and stay.

Common questions

Why does Semporna feel expensive?

The cost builds from several lines at once: flights to Tawau, a van, a boat, jetty and park fees, the stay and sometimes dive permits. No single line is huge, but together they add up. List every line from each quote side by side to see which one is driving the total.

What fees are not in the package?

The Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for others is reported as left out of some packages. Sipadan carries its own conservation and dive fees, shown on the Sabah Parks page, which you should confirm. Ask each operator for a line-by-line list of what is in and out.

How can I lower the cost without losing the trip?

Look at length, group size and meals. A shared boat is cheaper than a private one, and a package that already includes full board can beat a cheaper room with meals bought separately. Compare the total for your group, not the nightly rate.

Is there a cheaper Sabah island option?

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands near Kota Kinabalu avoid the Tawau flight, the van and the Semporna boat, and the entry fee for Malaysian adults is RM8 a day. They are a different trip, so check that they give you what you wanted.
