Resort-run activities: what is included vs charged
A resort page lists activities and you want to know which ones are in the price.
A list of activities on a resort page does not tell you what is in your price. Some are included, some carry a guest rate and some are separate. The fix is simple: ask the resort to mark every activity as included, discounted or extra, in writing.
If you are still choosing a resort, our guide on how to choose an island resort is a good start. The resort inclusion comparator helps you line up the answers from two places.
Which activities are usually asked about?
Here are common activities and what to ask. The right-hand column is a question, not an answer, because each resort decides.
| Activity | Typical question |
|---|---|
| Snorkel gear use | Lent, rented or included? See snorkel house and equipment hire |
| Guided snorkel trip | One trip or several, shared or private boat? |
| Kayak or paddleboard | Per hour or free for guests? |
| Kids club or craft | Staffed, ages, hours? |
| Island walk or jungle trek | Guide included? |
| Evening activity | Free, or ticketed? |
| Boat transfer between beaches | In the package or per trip? |
Our guide on one snorkel trip or several helps you read a schedule that lists many trips.
How do you read the words on the page?
Pay attention to small words, because they change the price.
- Complimentary or included: no extra charge, as the resort states it.
- Special rate or guest rate: still charged, at a lower price.
- Subject to availability: may not be offered on your dates.
- On request: not guaranteed, may need booking.
- Optional: charged separately.
If a page uses these words without a price, ask for the price.
How do extras change a family quotation?
Start with the package price for the whole family, then add each activity that is marked extra. For each one, multiply the price per person by the number of people who will join, or use the price per hour.
The package price plus those lines gives the true cost. Now ask the resort to mark one activity, such as the guided snorkel trip, as included, and remove that line. The difference shows what the answer was worth.
Try it in the island trip cost calculator with your own numbers. Our guide on what a resort price includes reads the same lines one by one.
What should you ask about booking and weather?
Activities depend on the sea. Ask who decides when a trip is cancelled, whether you can move to another day and what happens to your payment.
Ask how many places the resort has per trip. Our guide on hidden costs on island holidays shows where such extras land on a bill. Ask also about minimum numbers, as a trip may run only when enough guests sign up.
A better fit if…
A resort that lists every activity as included or charged may be a better fit if:
- you travel with children who want something to do each day.
- your budget has a clear ceiling.
- you want no surprise at check-out.
A simple stay may be a better fit if:
- you plan to rest on the beach and add activities one at a time.
- you book boat trips with an outside operator.
What should you ask the resort in writing?
- Which activities are included, discounted or extra?
- What are the prices for the extras?
- Which need booking, and how far ahead?
- What happens if weather cancels one?
- Is there a minimum number of guests?
With these saved, a list of activities becomes a list of costs you understand.
Common questions
Are resort activities usually free for guests?
Some are, and some are not. A resort may include a few basic activities in the room rate and charge for the rest. We cannot confirm any one place. Ask for each activity by name and get the answer in writing.
What is the difference between included and discounted?
Included means no extra charge at the time. Discounted means you still pay, but at a lower rate for guests. Ask the resort which words it uses, because a page that says 'special rate for guests' does not mean free.
Do I need to book activities in advance?
Often yes for boat trips and limited-slot activities, and sometimes no for self-service ones. Ask how far ahead to reserve, whether weather can cancel an activity and whether a deposit is taken.
What happens if an activity is cancelled for weather?
Policies differ. Some resorts offer another day, some a credit, and some give nothing. Ask before you book, and ask who decides when the sea is too rough.
