What a resort price includes, line by line

You have a total on your screen and want to know what it really covers.

A resort price is the sum of seven lines: the room, the meals, the boat, the fees, the activities, extra charges and the terms. Most confusion comes from one or two lines that the total hides. Read the quotation one line at a time, and write a question beside any line you cannot explain.

This guide is a reading method, not a price list. We never state a package price, because rooms, meals, boats and dates change the total. For the wider decision, see our hub guide on how to choose an island resort, and use the resort inclusion comparator to hold the lines in columns.

What are the seven lines?

Copy this table beside your quotation. The last column is where your questions go.

LineWhat it should sayYour question if unclear
RoomType, person count, bed layout, nightsIs this the exact room I will get?
MealsWhich meals, which days, drinksDoes it include arrival and departure days?
BoatReturn or one way, shared or private, hoursWho confirms the time?
FeesPark, conservation, jetty, councilIncluded, or paid on the day?
ActivitiesSnorkel trips, gear, toursWhich are free and which are charged?
ExtrasAny service, tax or surcharge linesWhat are these, and are they in the total?
TermsDeposit, change and cancellation rulesWhat if the boat cannot sail?

The practical point: a total with a blank in the table is not a full price. Fill the blank first, then compare.

Which lines are most often unclear?

Published pages show meals, boat and fees are the lines that vary most. One Sabah resort states full board (your main meals are included (check exactly which ones)).

It adds free coffee, tea and snacks, and a shared return boat from Semporna jetty [1]. Another, Rawa Island Resort, states that board with three buffet meals daily is compulsory for all rooms [2].

For fees, one operator describing a Mabul package notes that a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians is not included in some packages [3]. For marine parks, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reports an entry fee of RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners [4].

Amounts can change, so confirm each with the operator. Two quotations that look equal can differ by exactly these lines.

How do you read an unclear line?

Turn the line into a short question that has one answer. Do not ask “what is included?” Ask:

  • Does the meal line include breakfast on the day I leave?
  • Is the boat return, and what time is the last boat back?
  • Is the marine park fee in this total, and if not, how much per person?
  • Is there a service charge or tax on top of this line?
  • What is the deposit, and when is the balance due?

Write the answer beside the line, with the date you received it. If the answer changes, you have the earlier version.

What if two prices look the same but differ?

Look at the lines in the order of the table. The difference is usually in meals or the boat. If one resort includes both and the other includes neither, the cheaper total is not cheaper.

Add the missing lines to the shorter quotation using the resort’s own figures, and ask the resort to confirm. Our guide on why two resort prices on the same island differ goes through the common causes, and the island trip cost calculator lets you test your own numbers.

A better fit if…

Reading line by line may be a better fit if:

  • you are on a fixed budget and cannot afford a surprise.
  • the quotation arrived as one total with no breakdown.
  • you are comparing a package with a room-only rate.

Reading just the total may be a better fit if:

  • the resort already lists every line in writing.
  • you have compared the lines before and they match.
  • the terms and fees are clear and you are ready to book.

What is the next step?

Copy the quotation into the table and send us the blanks. We will help you turn each into a question you can send to the resort.

Send us the quotation you have, with any lines you are unsure about, and we will help you turn each unclear line into a written question for the resort.

Common questions

Why does the same resort show different totals?

Different quotations may use different dates, room types, meal plans or boat arrangements. Check that the dates, people and inclusions match before you compare. Ask the resort to list each line, so the difference becomes visible.

Is the marine park fee usually in the room price?

It varies. Some packages include it and some do not, and the amount depends on residency and age. Ask whether it is included, who collects it and where it is paid. Confirm the current amount with the operator.

What does full board usually include?

It usually means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones), but the details differ. Ask whether drinks, snacks, tea and coffee are included, and what happens on arrival and departure days. Get the answer in writing.

How do I query a line I do not understand?

Quote the line back and ask one clear question, such as which meals this line covers, or whether the boat is return. Write the reply beside the line. A short, specific question gets a better answer than a general one.
