Hidden island holiday costs beginners miss
You have a headline price and want to know what could still be added to it.
Beginners tend to miss twelve kinds of line item, and most of them are small on their own but add up together. The way to find them is to ask the seller to list what is not included, then price each excluded item. This page gives you the list, some sourced examples and the question that exposes each one.
Start with how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia, then use this checklist on your own quote.
Which twelve lines do beginners miss?
Tick each one on your quote:
- Marine park or park entry fee.
- Jetty fee.
- Local council or district charge.
- Peak or school-holiday surcharge.
- Drinks with meals.
- Snorkel gear rental.
- Boat leg that is one way only.
- Card or payment surcharge.
- Parking and fuel for the jetty trip.
- A night on the mainland before or after.
- Travel insurance.
- Tips and small purchases on the island.
Our guide on peak-season surcharges on island packages covers line 4, and jetty parking fees in packages covers line 9.
What do sourced fee examples look like?
Fees vary by place, and often by whether you are Malaysian. Free Malaysia Today reports an entry fee at Perhentian of RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners [1]. The same outlet reported that the Besut district council began charging an extra RM5 per visitor in 2022, with current status unknown [2].
In Sabah, one operator page lists a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians, not included in some packages [3]. Sabah Parks lists Tunku Abdul Rahman Park entry at RM8 for Malaysian adults and RM5 for Malaysians aged 13 to 17 [4]. For Sipadan, it lists a conservation fee of RM50 and a scuba fee of RM250 for Malaysians, to be confirmed before travel [5].
Several of these come from news or seller pages, so treat them as examples of the kind of line to ask about, not as your bill.
How do you add the missing lines back?
Follow four steps:
- List every line from the quote as included or not included.
- For each excluded line, ask the seller for the figure in writing.
- Add the figures to the quote total.
- Add a small buffer for lines you cannot price yet.
Now both quotes can be compared on the same lines. Our guide on is a cheaper package still cheaper after transfers shows why this matters.
Which questions expose each line?
Send these in one message:
- Which park, jetty and council fees apply, and are they included?
- Is there a peak or school-holiday surcharge on my dates?
- Which meals and drinks are included?
- Is gear provided or rented, and at what cost?
- Are both boat legs included?
- Is there a payment surcharge by card?
Our guide on spotting missing items in a package quote goes through the whole trip day by day.
A better fit if…
Using this checklist suits you if:
- your quote has a short list of inclusions.
- two quotes look close in price.
- this is your first island trip and you are not sure what to ask.
What should you do next?
Tick the twelve lines on your quote, send the unclear ones to the seller and add the answers to your total. Then put the new total in the island trip cost calculator. If two sellers still differ, compare them line by line.
Common questions
What are the most common costs people miss?
Park and jetty fees, peak or school-holiday surcharges, drinks with meals, gear rental, card charges, parking and a night on the mainland. Which apply depends on the island and package, so ask for each by name.
Are park fees usually in the package price?
It depends on the package. Some include them and some do not. Ask whether each fee is included or paid on arrival, and for whom. Fees can differ for Malaysians and non-Malaysians.
How do I avoid surprise charges?
Ask the seller to list what is not included, not only what is. Add each excluded item back using official or seller figures, and keep a buffer for items you cannot price yet.
Why do some figures here say "reported"?
Because some fees come from news reports or a seller page, not an official schedule. We show them with the source and ask you to confirm. Our guide on unverified figures explains the wording.
