Redang or Perhentian Besar for a first trip?

You have two good names and need to know which suits a first island trip.

Redang and Perhentian Besar both take a speedboat of about 40 to 45 minutes, so the boat rarely decides it. Choose Redang if you want a quiet resort holiday arranged for you. Choose Perhentian Besar if you like a mix of chalets and resorts and do not mind sorting out a little more yourself.

Your starting point and your group matter more than the island name. Our guide on how to choose a Malaysian island explains the wider decision, and the island shortlist matcher can narrow it down.

How do the two islands compare side by side?

This table uses figures from the research we checked. Where we do not have a confirmed answer, it says to ask.

Fee amounts come from secondary sources, and the Besut council charge has an unknown current status. Confirm both with the operator before you budget.

Which jetty is less effort for you?

Redang boats leave from Merang, and Perhentian boats leave from Kuala Besut. The better jetty is the one that fits your starting point and your arrival time, not the one that sounds closer.

Redang also has a scheduled ferry from Shahbandar in Kuala Terengganu, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours [8]. A Perhentian trip also includes a road leg to Kuala Besut. Use the jetty connection planner with your real starting point, and see our Redang Merang jetty arrival guide.

How is the beach layout different?

Redang has resorts spread across several bays, with Pasir Panjang as the largest beach. You can read more in our Pulau Redang guide.

Perhentian Besar has smaller bays with a mix of chalets and resorts. Our Perhentian Besar guide lists the areas. Whichever you choose, ask how far your room is from the beach you want, and whether there is a way to reach the snorkelling area without a long walk.

When can you go?

Both islands are affected by the northeast monsoon. Most east-coast resorts close during it, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year.

School holidays and long weekends can fill early, so sort the dates before you compare prices. Never plan around a weather promise, because nobody can give one. Ask what the resort does if the boat cannot sail.

A better fit if…

Redang may be a better fit if:

  • you want a resort that arranges the boat, meals and snorkel trip together.
  • you prefer a quieter evening.
  • you are travelling with children or parents and want fewer moving parts.

Perhentian Besar may be a better fit if:

  • you want to choose between simple chalets and resorts.
  • you like the idea of a few small places to eat.
  • you are flexible about timings.

What should you ask both islands?

Send the same questions to each, so the answers line up:

  • Which jetty, and what time is the boat on my dates?
  • Which meals are included?
  • Is the marine park fee in the package?
  • What are your season dates this year?
  • What is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?

Once you have two written quotations, read them side by side. Our guide on finding the real differences between two island quotations shows how.

Tell us your dates, who is going and where you are starting from, and we will help you ask both islands the same questions so the two quotations are easy to compare.

Common questions

Which is easier for a first-timer, Redang or Perhentian Besar?

Both involve a speedboat of roughly 40 to 45 minutes, so the boat is not the deciding factor. Redang suits you if you want a resort that arranges most things. Perhentian Besar suits you if you are happy to choose between chalets and resorts and sort out more yourself. Ask about transfers on both.

Do both islands close for the monsoon?

Yes, most east-coast resorts on both islands close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March. Exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask each resort for its dates in writing, and ask what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail.

Which jetty is closer to me?

It depends on where you start. Merang serves Redang and Kuala Besut serves Perhentian, and they are in different parts of the Terengganu coast. Use the jetty connection planner with your own starting point, and ask the agent which airport suits your booking.

Is one of them cheaper?

We cannot say without a quotation, because room type, meals, boat and dates change the total more than the island name does. Build a comparison from two written quotations, line by line. Our cost calculator lets you test your own numbers.
