Gemia or Redang for a private-island feel
You want a private-island feel and need to test what that claim means for two.
A private island is private in ownership, but how private your days feel depends on how many guests share it. Gemia is described as privately owned with one resort, and Redang has larger resorts along several bays. Ask about rooms, beaches and day visitors, because those decide the feel.
For each place, see the Pulau Gemia guide and the Pulau Redang guide. Our comparison of Kapas and Gemia explains the relationship between the two Marang islands.
How do Gemia and Redang compare side by side?
The table uses figures from the research we checked. Gaps are marked as questions.
| Gemia | Redang | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Privately owned, one resort [1] | Several resorts along bays [3] |
| Jetty | Marang | Merang |
| Boat time | About 20 minutes [1] | About 45 minutes [2] |
| Room count | Not confirmed, ask | Berjaya Redang Island Resort reports 97 rooms [4] |
| Beach sharing | Ask | Ask |
| Season | Not confirmed, ask | Most resorts close, roughly Oct to Mar [5] |
What does private mean on a small island?
It means one owner decides who comes and goes. It does not by itself mean few guests, and it does not say anything about day visitors.
The questions that test privacy are concrete:
- How many rooms does the resort have?
- Does the beach in front belong to guests only?
- Are day trippers allowed to land?
- How many boats stop at the jetty on a busy day?
What can a larger Redang resort offer in privacy?
A larger resort can give you space through its layout. Some rooms sit further from the main areas. Pasir Panjang has about half a dozen resorts [3], so that beach can be shared, while Teluk Dalam and Teluk Kalong are other resort areas to compare.
Ask which rooms are furthest from the restaurant and pool. Our guide to Redang beaches for peace and rest describes the bays.
How do the journeys differ?
The crossing from Marang to Gemia is about 20 minutes [1], and Merang to Redang is about 45 minutes [2]. Gemia is about 800 metres north of Kapas, so you pass close to another island on the way.

What should you ask before paying?
- How many rooms does the resort have, and how many face the beach?
- Do day visitors land, and where?
- Which rooms are quietest?
- Is the boat included, in which directions?
- What are the season dates, and what happens if the boat cannot sail?
A better fit if…
Gemia may be a better fit if:
- you want to stay inside one resort and rely on one provider.
- a shorter crossing matters to you.
Redang may be a better fit if:
- you want a choice of resorts and room types.
- you want to compare several bays before you decide.

Common questions
Is Gemia really private?
One blog says the island is privately owned and its only resort is Gem Island Resort and Spa. That tells you who owns it, not how many guests share the beach. Ask the resort how many rooms it has, whether day visitors land and whether other boats stop there.
Can a big Redang resort feel private?
It can, depending on the resort and the beach in front of it. Berjaya Redang Island Resort reports 97 rooms, and Pasir Panjang hosts about half a dozen resorts. Ask how the beach is shared and which rooms sit furthest from the main areas.
Which has the shorter boat?
Gemia is about 20 minutes by speedboat from Marang, and Redang about 45 minutes from Merang. A shorter crossing leaves more of your first day, though privacy matters more to many couples. Ask each resort for its boat times.
When do these islands close?
Most Redang resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly October to March. We have no confirmed season for Gemia, so ask in writing before you pay a deposit.
