Perhentian: package or DIY with chalets
You can book a package or build the trip from chalets, and want to see where they cross.
A Perhentian package costs less than a do-it-yourself (DIY) chalet trip when the package’s extra cost per night is smaller than what you would spend on meals and extras yourself. You can find the exact crossover with one division. Put both options on the same assumptions first.
For the island background, see our Perhentian Kecil island guide. If you want the full two-adult total, our Perhentian budget for two adults builds it line by line.
What do both options share?
Some costs do not change with your choice. Use the same figures on both sides.
- The speedboat, reported at RM70 return per adult, date unknown [1].
- The marine park fee, reported at RM5 per adult with MyKad and RM30 without [2].
- The same dates and number of nights.
These are secondary figures, so confirm them with the operator. Because they appear on both sides, they do not decide the comparison. The room, meals and extras do.
How do you find the crossover?
The crossover is the point where DIY and package cost the same. Here is the formula, with no prices assumed.
- Work out the package’s extra cost per night over the chalet room, for two adults.
- Count meals eaten per day by everyone, for example three meals by two adults is six meals.
- Divide the first number by the second.
Say the package costs G more per night than the chalet room, you stay N nights, and everyone eats M meals in total. The crossover meal price is G times N, divided by M.
If you can eat for less than that, DIY is cheaper. If meals cost more, the package wins.
What does a DIY trip add?
A DIY trip adds lines that a package may already hold. Check each one.
- Meals for every day, including drinks.
- A taxi boat for the last leg, reported at about RM20 in one blog [3].
- Snorkel trips or equipment hire.
- Time spent arranging it all.
Our guide on why DIY can cost more on a small island goes through the same lines. Our list of what a Perhentian package usually includes helps you tick them off.
What does a package hide?
A package can hide a gap: a meal plan that skips lunch, a boat that covers one direction, or drinks that cost extra. Read the quote for what is missing, not only for what is there.
Our guide to spotting missing items in a package quote gives a checklist. If a leg is missing, add it to the package side before you compare.
When does the season matter?
Both options face the same limit. The heavy monsoon runs November to February, and most islands are essentially closed to tourists then [4]. Confirm season dates in writing, whichever route you choose.
A better fit if…
DIY with chalets may be a better fit if:
- you are happy to choose where and what you eat each day.
- you want to adjust the plan as the weather and mood allow.
A package may be a better fit if:
- you want one total and fewer decisions.
- your meal costs would sit above the crossover.
Our package versus independent island trip cost comparison shows the same method on other islands. You can try your own numbers in the island trip cost calculator.
Common questions
Is a package or a DIY chalet trip cheaper on Perhentian?
It depends on the meal price and what the package includes. The crossover meal price equals the package's extra cost per night divided by the number of meals eaten per day by everyone. Below that price DIY is cheaper, above it the package is. Use your two written quotes to test it.
What does a DIY trip add that a package may already cover?
Boat transfers, the last leg between beaches, meals, snorkel trips and any park fee may each be a separate payment. A package may bundle some or all of them. Ask what each quotation includes before you compare the totals.
Can I mix a package and DIY?
Yes. Some travellers book a package for the first nights and a chalet for the rest, or buy only the boat and room from an agent. Mixing is fine if you list every line, so none is paid twice or missed.
Do chalets and packages both close for the monsoon?
Most islands are essentially closed to tourists during the heavy monsoon from November to February. Exact dates vary by place. Ask each chalet and each package provider for season dates in writing.
