Redang: package or independent booking

For a first Redang trip, a package is simpler because one party arranges the room, boat and meals. Independent booking can cost less, but only when the parts you add up are lower than the package. Put both on the same assumptions, then check where they cross.

What does each option include?

A package joins several lines into one price. Independent booking leaves you to buy each line.

How do you find the crossover?

The crossover is where the package costs the same as the parts added together. Here is the method, with letters standing in for your own numbers.

1. Take the package price and subtract the room-only rate for the same nights. That is the package gap.
2. Add the boat, both ways, for two adults.
3. Add the park fee and any snorkel trips.
4. Subtract those from the package gap.
5. Divide what is left by the number of meals you will buy.

Say the package gap is G, the boat for two adults both ways is B, the fee is F and trips are T. What is left is G minus B, F and T.

Divide that by the meals you will buy, for example 18 for three days of six meals. If you can eat for less than that per meal, independent booking wins. If meals cost more, the package wins.

What does independent booking add?

It adds work, and work has a cost.

• Finding a boat on your dates, both ways.
• Matching the boat time with check-in and check-out.
• Paying the park fee on arrival.
• Booking each extra by itself.

A boat from Merang is about 45 minutes ^[1], and the scheduled ferry from Kuala Terengganu is about 1.5 to 2 hours ^[2]. The slower route costs time. Our guide to the Merang boat transfer cost itemises the shorter one.

What does a package add?

A package adds a single point of contact and a single total. It can also add lines you would not choose, such as a meal plan bigger than you need.

Does the season matter?

Yes. Most resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly October to March, and ferries are restricted ^[4].

This affects both options. The park fee is reported at RM5 per adult with MyKad and RM30 without ^[3], and is the same either way.

A better fit if…

A package may be a better fit if:

• this is your first island trip and you want fewer moving parts.
• you are travelling with children or parents.

Independent booking may be a better fit if:

• you know the resort you want and can book it directly.
• you are happy to arrange the boat and meals yourself.
