Island hopping boat costs: per person or boat

Two island-hopping quotes use different units and you cannot tell which one is cheaper for your group.

To compare island-hopping boat quotes, put them in the same unit: price per person for your exact group. A per-boat price divided by your group size gives that figure. Then check the conditions behind each price, because a low number can hide a minimum or a short time limit.

Our guide on private versus shared break-even group size takes the maths further. The island trip cost calculator can hold your totals.

What are the two units?

Operators quote in one of two ways.

UnitHow it worksWhat it favours
Per personEach traveller pays a fixed priceSmall groups and solo travellers
Per boatOne price for the whole boatLarger groups that fill the seats

A per-person price grows with your group. A per-boat price is fixed, so each share shrinks as people join. Neither is cheaper in general, and it depends on your size.

What do the reported prices look like?

Two Perhentian examples show the two styles. Both are blog figures with unknown dates, so confirm them.

  • A speedboat ticket reported at RM35 one way per person [2]. This is a per-person unit.
  • A taxi boat between the two islands reported at about RM20 [1]. The source does not say whether that is per person or per boat, which is exactly the question to ask.

If the taxi boat were charged per boat and carried four friends, the share would be RM5 each [1]. If it were per person, a group of four would pay RM80 [1]. The unit changes the answer by a factor of four, so never guess.

Which four conditions sit behind a boat price?

Ask for these in writing.

  1. Minimum group: does the price apply only above a certain number of people?
  2. Seat limit: how many people does the boat carry before it is full?
  3. Time limit: how many hours or stops are included?
  4. Extras: are fuel, a guide, snorkel gear and the park fee included?

A per-boat price for a short time is not comparable with a per-person price for a half day. Match the hours before you match the money. Our guide on shared and private boats for Perhentian snorkelling lists the questions for snorkelling trips.

How do you compare for your group?

  1. Write down your group size (n).
  2. For a per-boat quote, divide by n to get a per-person figure.
  3. For a per-person quote, multiply by n to see the group total.
  4. Compare the per-person figures, then check the conditions.

Test a second group size, since friends can change numbers late. Our note on island hopping by private or shared boat in Semporna shows the same maths for another area.

A better fit if…

A per-person price may suit you if your group is small or the numbers may change. A per-boat price may suit you better if you are a full boat and want the stops to follow your plan. For a wider budget, see friends island trip budget per person for six.

What should you ask?

  • Is this price per person or per boat?
  • What is the minimum group size and the seat limit?
  • How long and how many stops are included?
  • Are fuel, guide, gear and park fee included?

Send us the quotes you have, your group size and the stops you want, and we will help you put them in the same unit so the cheaper boat is clear.

Common questions

What is the difference between per-person and per-boat pricing?

A per-person price is charged for each traveller, so it grows with the group. A per-boat price is one total for the boat, so each person's share falls as the group grows. Ask which unit a quote uses before comparing.

How do I compare a per-boat quote with a per-person one?

Divide the per-boat price by your group size to get a per-person figure. Then compare it with the per-person quote. Check that both cover the same stops, time and seats.

Are the Perhentian prices on this page current?

No. They come from a blog with an unknown date and are examples of the two units. Ask the operator for the current price for your date and group before you plan around them.

What conditions can change a boat price?

Common conditions are a minimum group size, a seat limit, a time limit and the number of stops included. A cheap price that applies only for a large group or a short time can cost more for you. Ask for the conditions in writing.
