Mersing island hopping: Rawa, Besar and Tinggi
You are weighing the Mersing islands and want to know which fit in one day.
From Mersing, Rawa and Besar are the shorter hops, and Tinggi is reached from a different jetty. A day usually fits one or two islands well, not all three. Boat times in our research are low confidence and some boats are tied to the tide, so ask your operator for minutes and tide notes in writing.
Our guide on choosing a Johor island: Mersing, Tanjung Leman and what each offers sets the wider scene. For island pages, see Pulau Rawa, Pulau Besar and Pulau Tinggi.
How do the three islands compare?
This table uses only the reports we found. All are low confidence, so confirm each.
| Rawa | Besar | Tinggi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported boat from Mersing | Ferry about an hour, resort speedboat 20 to 30 minutes [1] | Resort speedboat about 30 minutes [2] | From Tanjung Leman about 30 minutes by speedboat, or a 45-minute ferry listing [3] |
| Tide | Ferry reported tide dependent | Boats reported at high tide only | Ask |
| Jetty | Mersing | Mersing | Tanjung Leman, also Mersing |

Which combinations fit one day?
Rawa and Besar both leave from the Mersing side, so they fit together more easily than either does with Tinggi. Our guide on Rawa and Pulau Besar as a Mersing two-island trip shows how the pair works. Tinggi suits its own day or a night, since the boat from Tanjung Leman is a separate journey.
Count the boat minutes first, then the time you want at each stop. If the sum leaves less time in the water than on the boat, choose fewer stops.
Do tides change the plan?
Possibly. One guide says Besar boats run only at high tide [2], and another calls the Rawa ferry tide dependent [1]. If your boat follows the tide, your arrival and departure move with it.
Build slack into your day, and ask for the first and last boat on your dates.
When are the islands closed?
Most Mersing resorts and boats stop in the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Our guide on Mersing islands: the November to February closure explains it. Ask for opening dates in writing.
What about fees and questions to ask?
A marine park fee for the Mersing area is reported at the Mersing jetty or terminal, based on a 2017 schedule [4]. Treat the amounts as unverified and ask what applies now.
Send these questions to every operator:
- Which islands, how many minutes at each and how many on the boat?
- Does the boat follow the tide on my dates?
- Is the marine park fee included, and which jetty do we leave from?
- What is the plan if the sea is rough?
- Are snorkel gear and life jackets included?
A better fit if…
A Mersing day is a better fit if you live in the south, want a short sea journey and are happy with a simple trip. A longer stay on Rawa or Besar is a better fit if you want more time in the water. See a 2D1N Rawa plan from Mersing for an overnight shape.
Common questions
Can I visit Rawa, Besar and Tinggi in one day?
Probably not all three. Tinggi is reached from Tanjung Leman as well as Mersing, while Rawa and Besar leave from the Mersing side, so combining them adds boat time. Ask the operator for a stop list with minutes. Two islands with real time is usually better than three rushed.
Do Mersing boats follow the tide?
Some reports say so. One guide says Pulau Besar boats run only at high tide, and another calls the Rawa ferry tide dependent. Both reports are low confidence, so ask your operator how the tide changes the timetable on your dates.
When do the Mersing islands close?
Most resorts and boats stop in the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Do not plan a trip in that window without written confirmation. Our guide on the closure explains it in more detail.
Is there a marine park fee?
A marine park fee is reported for the Mersing area, paid at the Mersing jetty or terminal counters, based on a 2017 schedule. The amounts may have changed, so ask the operator whether the fee is included and what the current rate is.
