Koh Samui for groups: when does it win?
You are planning with friends and wonder when a Thai island beats a Malaysian one for the group.
Koh Samui beats a Malaysian island for a group only when the per-person total, flights included, comes out no higher and everyone holds a valid passport. Research found no Samui prices, so this page gives you the formula and the group risks, not a winner. Run it on written quotes for your own dates.
For background, see Koh Samui and our wider frame on choosing between Koh Samui, Lombok and a Malaysian island.
How do group sums differ from solo sums?
Some costs are shared, and some are paid per person. Sort each line before you compare.
Shared costs fall as the group grows. Per-person costs do not.
| Cost line | Type | What a bigger group does |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | Per person | Nothing, fares are individual |
| Villa or shared rooms | Shared | Dilutes the cost per head |
| Car or minibus | Shared | Dilutes the cost per head |
| Private boat | Shared | Dilutes it, up to the boat’s seats |
| Meals and drinks | Per person | Nothing |
| Visa or entry costs, if any | Per person | Nothing |
On a Malaysian island the transfer is usually a per-person ferry or speedboat ticket. One guide lists a Tioman ferry at about RM60 for an adult each way, but that listing is dated and inconsistent [3]. Treat it as a pointer, not a price.
What is the formula?
Write it down once, then run it for each option:
Per person = flight (or ground leg) + transfer share + stay share + food + entry costs + a spare-night share.
Use words and letters, not guesses. Say F is the flight, S is the shared stay bill and N is the group size. The stay share is S divided by N.
Add F, the transfer, food and the rest for each person, and compare the totals between Samui and the Malaysian island. Our island trip cost calculator holds the lines for you.
Which group risks does Samui add?
Four risks sit on top of the sums:
- Mixed fares: friends booking on different days pay different fares, which can cause friction.
- One delayed traveller: a late flight can strand part of the group, so ask who is covered.
- Uneven passports: one short-validity passport removes one seat.
- Deposits: money paid early is at risk if someone drops out.
For flights, Bangkok Airways launched a Kuala Lumpur to Koh Samui route around 2011 or 2012, but the current schedule is unverified [1]. The alternative is one stop via Bangkok.
A stop is a connection to protect. Thailand cut the visa-free stay for Malaysians to 30 days from 15 September 2026 [2], which suits a short trip.
How does a Malaysian island compare for a group?
It removes the passport step and the flight, and usually keeps the whole trip in one quote. It adds a jetty and a boat, with its own cut-off times.
For the boat sums, our guide on private boat price vs shared break-even group size shows when a private boat beats a shared one. Read how large a friend group suits one boat if your group is large.
A better fit if…
Samui may be a better fit if:
- everyone holds a valid passport and agrees on one set of dates.
- the per-person total from real quotes is no higher than the domestic option.
- you want a longer trip and can afford a spare day.
A Malaysian island may be a better fit if:
- someone in the group has an uncertain passport or fixed leave.
- you want one quote, one deposit and one boat.
- the group is mixed in budget and you need a simple split.
What should you ask before you pay?
- What is the per-person price for each traveller, and what is shared?
- What is the deposit, and who gets it back if someone drops out?
- Who protects the group if one flight or boat is late?
- What is the cancellation rule for the whole booking?
Common questions
When does Koh Samui beat a Malaysian island for a group?
It wins when the group's per-person total, flights included, is no higher than the Malaysian option and everyone holds a valid passport. Research found no Samui prices, so run the formula on real quotes for your dates. If the sums are close, the simpler trip usually deserves the tie.
How should a group split flights?
Flights are per person, so fares can differ by traveller and by booking day. Agree one target fare and a deadline, and let each person book their own seat, unless you buy as one group booking. Ask whether one delayed traveller affects the rest, and who protects a missed connection.
What passport issues can sink a group trip?
Any traveller with a short-validity or missing passport can stop their own seat. Thailand also cut the visa-free stay for Malaysians to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Check every passport before anyone pays, and set a clear refund rule inside the group for anyone who cannot go.
Is Samui cheaper than a Malaysian island for a big group?
That is unknown, because research found no Samui prices. A larger group dilutes shared costs such as a villa, a car or a boat, but flights are paid per person. Compare per-person totals from written quotes, and use our cost calculator to hold the lines side by side.
