Package vs independent island trip: a cost comparison
You are weighing a package against booking the pieces yourself and want a fair way to compare them.
A fair comparison puts the same eight lines on both sides: room, meals, boat, road leg, fees, activities, extras and cancellation terms. The cheaper option is the one with the lower total for the same inclusions. Price both before you choose.
Start with the wider cost picture in how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia. Then build both versions in the island trip cost calculator.
What are the eight lines to compare?
Use the same list for the package and the self-built trip. A line that a package includes still needs a price on the independent side.
| Line | In a package | If you book it yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Room | Included | Priced by night and room type |
| Meals | Often a meal plan | Priced per person per meal |
| Boat | Often included | Priced per person or per boat |
| Road leg | Sometimes included | Fuel, tolls, parking or a fare |
| Fees | Sometimes included | Marine park and jetty fees |
| Activities | Depends on package | Priced trip by trip |
| Extras | Depends | Gear hire, water, snacks |
| Cancellation | Set by the package | Differs for each booking |
The point is not to say which side wins. The point is to stop a missing line from looking free.
What do the reported figures look like?
Reported figures show how quickly small items stack. A blogger lists a Perhentian speedboat ticket as RM35 one way and RM70 return, with the date unknown [1]. A taxi boat from Besar to Kecil is listed as about RM20 [2].
If those figures still held, two adults would pay RM140 return on the main boat alone [1]. Marine park fees come on top: the reported rate for a Malaysian adult with MyKad is RM5 and for a child RM2 [3]. Treat all of these as unconfirmed and ask the operator.
How do I build the two versions?
Use the same assumptions for both: the same dates, the same room, the same meals.
- Write the trip: dates, people, ages, nights.
- Fill the package column from one written quote.
- Fill the independent column from separate quotes.
- Leave a line blank if nobody has priced it, and mark it.
- Add each column and divide by the number of people.
A blank line is a question, not zero. If the independent side has more blanks, its total is incomplete and looks lower than it really is. Our guide on how to check a package price helps with the package side.
Where do the two sides cross over?
A package tends to win when more lines are bundled, the group is large and the schedule is tight. Doing it yourself tends to win when needs are simple, the trip is short and you already own the gear.
Our guide on when a package is cheaper than booking pieces goes into the crossover. For a small island where options are few, see why booking yourself can cost more.
A better fit if…
A package may be a better fit if:
- you want one quote, one contact and a set transfer.
- you travel with children or older parents.
An independent trip may be a better fit if:
- you are comfortable booking boat and room separately.
- you can handle a changed plan if a boat is cancelled.
What should you ask before you pay?
- Which of the eight lines does the package include?
- What does each separate booking cost, in writing?
- What are the cancellation terms on each side?
- Which fees are payable in cash on arrival?
- Is the seller licensed? See how to verify a tour operator.
Keep both versions in the same place. The side you can explain in one page is the one to trust.
Common questions
Is a package always more expensive than booking myself?
No, and it is not always cheaper either. A package bundles room, meals and transfers, while a self-built trip can leave some lines out. The honest answer comes from pricing both with the same inclusions. Our cost calculator holds both versions side by side.
Which lines do people forget when building a trip themselves?
Marine park fees, the road leg to the jetty, taxi boats between beaches, activity equipment and meals on arrival day. List each as its own line so a missing item is never counted as zero.
Are the boat prices in your examples current?
They are reported figures from a blogger and a secondary source, and the dates are unknown. Use them only to see how the lines fit together. Ask the operator for the current fare before you plan with it.
At what group size does a package start to win?
There is no single number, because it depends on resort and season. Larger groups share boat and transfer costs, which tends to favour a package or a group rate. Price your own group both ways and compare.
