Why DIY can cost more on small islands
You expected booking yourself to be cheaper and want to see how a small island can change that.
A small island has few boats, a limited number of rooms and island prices for food and extras. Those four forces can push a do-it-yourself (DIY) trip above a package. Test your island before you assume booking yourself is cheaper.
Start with the comparison method in package versus independent island trip. Then use the island trip cost calculator with your own numbers.
How does a thin boat timetable raise the cost?
When few boats run, your plan has to fit them. One source lists a public boat from Merang to Lang Tengah. It has two departures from April to August and one from September to March, at about RM40 one way for an adult, undated [1].
If the only outbound boat leaves at midday and the return leaves in the early afternoon, a short stay can lose half a day each side. A longer stay may be needed to make the trip worthwhile. Confirm the current timetable with the operator.
What are the four forces on a small island?
Each force is a question, not a rule.
- Boat timetable: how many boats, and do they match your flights?
- Room scarcity: how many rooms exist, and how early do they fill?
- Short-hop boats: taxi boats between beaches add up. A blogger lists Besar to Kecil at about RM20 [2].
- Island prices: meals and extras may cost more than on the mainland.
A package can absorb some of these by bundling the boat and meals. Pieces expose all of them to you.
How do small costs stack up?
Small fees look harmless one by one. A blogger lists a Perhentian speedboat at RM35 one way and RM70 return, with the marine park fee separate [3]. Add a taxi boat, snorkel hire and a few meals, and the extras can rival the room.
Do not guess any of these. Ask each seller for the current price in writing, and leave a line blank until you have it.
A blank is a question, not zero. Our guide on hidden costs on island holidays lists more of them.
How do I test my island?
Ten minutes is enough. Use the same dates and people on both sides.
- Write the boat times for your dates and the cost of each.
- Write the room options and the earliest booking date.
- List meals and extras you expect to buy.
- Ask for a package quote with inclusions listed.
- Add the pieces and compare with the package.
If the pieces cost more once the extra night and short-hop boats are included, the island is one where DIY is not the saving you hoped. See when a package is cheaper than booking pieces for the four cases.
A better fit if…
A DIY trip may still be a better fit if:
- the island has several rooms, frequent boats and cafes.
- you are flexible on dates and happy to adjust the plan.
A package may be a better fit if:
- the island has one boat window and few rooms.
- you want meals, transfers and fees counted once.
What should you ask before you pay?
- How many boats run on my dates, and when?
- What does a taxi boat or short hop cost?
- Which meals and extras are at island prices?
- What happens if I miss the only boat?
- What is the cancellation rule on each booking?
Keep the answers beside your numbers. For the checklist of jobs that come with DIY, see booking an island trip yourself.
Common questions
Is booking myself always cheaper than a package?
No. On a small island, a thin boat timetable and few rooms can raise the cost of booking pieces. Price both with the same inclusions before assuming either one is cheaper.
Why does a boat timetable affect cost?
If the only boat leaves before your flight lands or returns before your check-out, you may need an extra night on one side. That night, plus meals and transfers, can outweigh a lower room rate.
What small costs do DIY travellers forget on islands?
Taxi boats between beaches, marine park fees, snorkel hire, bottled water and meals bought at island prices. List each as its own line, with a question mark where nobody has given you a price yet.
How can I test my island?
Write the boat times, room options and meal choices on the island, then price a package and the same trip built from pieces. If the extra nights and short-hop boats close the gap, a package may suit you better.
