Package resort or book your own room?

You are comparing a ready-made package with booking a room yourself and want to know which suits.

A package gives you one price for several things, and booking your own room gives you the room and leaves the rest to you. Neither is always cheaper. The only fair test is to build both totals from the same list of lines.

If you are still choosing, our guide on how to choose an island resort is a good start. The island trip cost calculator lets you add each line with your own numbers.

What does each route give and take away?

A package gives you convenience and fewer decisions. A room-only booking gives you control and flexibility, and it asks you to organise more.

How do you rebuild a package price?

Take the package and list its parts, then price each part separately.

  1. Room cost for your nights and room type.
  2. Meals: which ones, and for how many people.
  3. Boat transfer both ways.
  4. Activities, such as a snorkel trip.
  5. Fees, such as the marine park conservation fee.
  6. Tax and service charge, if shown separately.

Now do the same for your room-only route and add the parts you must buy yourself. Compare the two totals. Our guide on package versus independent trip: a cost comparison shows the method in more detail.

What do you take on when you book yourself?

You become your own planner. That can be a pleasure for some people and a worry for others.

  • You arrange the boat and check the schedule.
  • You decide where to eat and how much it costs.
  • You pay the park fee and other charges at the right place.
  • You check cancellation terms on every booking.

Our guide on booking an island trip yourself explains what that involves. The one on why a do-it-yourself trip can cost more on a small island looks at common surprises.

When is a package the better choice?

A package tends to help when items cost more separately or are hard to arrange alone, such as boat transfers on a small island. Our guide on when a package is cheaper than booking pieces explains the pattern.

On the other hand, a package may include meals you will not eat. Ask which items can be removed and whether the price drops.

A better fit if…

A package may be a better fit if:

  • you want fewer decisions and one point of contact.
  • you travel with children or older parents.
  • the boat is difficult to arrange yourself.

Booking your own room may be a better fit if:

  • you are comfortable organising the boat and meals.
  • you want to choose where to eat and what to do.
  • you have found a room rate that is clearly lower.

What should you ask for in writing?

  1. A package inclusion list, with each line marked.
  2. The room-only rate and what it excludes.
  3. The cost and timing of boat transfers.
  4. All fees and taxes.
  5. The cancellation rule for each route.

With both quotes built from the same lines, the choice usually becomes clear.

Tell us your dates, your group and how much you want arranged for you, and we will help you ask for a package quote and a room-only quote that can be compared line by line.

Common questions

Is a package always cheaper than booking a room myself?

Not always. A package can include meals, boat transfers and activities that cost extra when booked separately, and it can also include things you do not use. We cannot say which is cheaper without both quotations. Add up every line for each route.

What does a package usually include on an island?

It varies, and some include a room, meals, boat transfer and a snorkel trip, while others include only some of these. Ask for the inclusion list in writing and mark each item as included, discounted or extra.

What do I take on if I book a room myself?

You usually organise the boat, meals, fees and timings yourself. That gives flexibility and can lower the cost, and it also leaves more for you to coordinate. Ask the room provider what is not included.

Can a package be changed or refunded?

Terms differ by resort and package. Some are fixed and some allow changes. Read the cancellation rule before you pay, and ask what happens if the boat is cancelled for weather.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
