Luggage and sports gear on short island flights

You are packing snorkel gear for a short flight and are unsure what the airline will accept.

Check the airline’s fare conditions for checked weight, cabin weight and sports equipment before you pack. Each airline sets its own limits, and we did not find a sourced table. Keep fragile and valuable items in the cabin, and keep everything you cannot replace on the island with you.

Then pack so that one person can carry the bag across a jetty.

Our guide on luggage on island boats covers the boat leg. The island packing checklist lists what to bring.

Which items go where?

Use this table as a starting point, then confirm each row with your airline.

ItemWhere to packWhy
Passport, ID, phone, cashCabinNeeded at every step, cannot be replaced
Power bank, spare batteriesCabin, and ask the airlineAirlines set rules for batteries
Camera, droneCabinFragile, high value

The result is a short list of “ask first” items instead of a long list of guesses.

What should you ask the airline or charter operator?

Send these questions in writing and keep the reply:

  • What is the checked baggage weight for my fare, and what is the cabin weight?
  • Are fins, masks and dive weights counted as sports equipment?
  • Is there a charge for sports equipment, and when do I pay it?
  • What are the rules for power banks, batteries and sprays?
  • If I travel by charter, what is the baggage limit for the aircraft?

Redang Airport is reported as charter only [1], and Tioman had no commercial flights as of May 2024 [2]. For those islands, your last flight leg is either a charter or none at all, so ask the operator directly. See Redang airport charters: what they are and who uses them.

How do you plan the hand-off from flight to boat?

Count your bags at each step. The flight takes them, a van or taxi carries them, and the boat crew lifts them across a gap.

A van from Tawau to the Semporna jetty is reported at about 75 minutes, and the speedboat adds about 45 to 60 minutes [3]. Bags that are easy at the airport can be hard on a wet jetty.

Pack one soft bag per person and a small bag for the cabin. If you travel with a group, split heavy items so no single bag is too much for one person.

A better fit if…

A single soft bag is a better fit if you take a short flight and a small boat. A hard case for fragile gear may be a better fit only if the airline accepts it and the road leg is paved. Hire or rent gear on the island if you are unsure.

For the flight-to-boat timing, see checking a flight against a boat cut-off.

Tell us what gear you plan to bring and which flight and boat you will use, and we will help you ask the airline and the resort the right questions before you pack.

Common questions

How much luggage can I bring on a short domestic flight?

It depends on the airline and your fare. We did not find a sourced allowance table, so check the fare conditions for checked weight, cabin weight and any extra charge for sports equipment, and compare them with your packing list before you buy.

Can I bring snorkel gear on the plane?

Masks, fins and snorkels are usually packed in checked bags, but rules differ, so ask the airline. Keep a mask in your cabin bag if you want it for the first day, and ask whether fins count as sports equipment.

What about dive cylinders and weights?

Ask the airline about each item before you pack, since cylinders and weights may be restricted or priced separately. Some divers hire cylinders and weights at the dive centre instead. Ask your operator what is provided.

Do charter flights to Redang have tighter limits?

Small aircraft set their own baggage limits, so ask the charter operator in writing. Redang Airport is reported as charter only, so you would not use a scheduled airline for that final hop.
