Return flights in an island package
You live far from the coast and want to know when a package includes your flight.
Most island quotations cover the room, meals and boat, and leave the flight to you unless the package says it is air-inclusive. If a flight is included, ask who ticketed it, what baggage it carries and what happens if it changes. The real work is joining the flight to the boat.

Which parts make up a flight-based trip?
A trip from far away has three parts. The flight lands at a mainland airport, a road leg takes you to the jetty, and a boat takes you to the island.

Flying straight to the island is rarely an option. Redang’s airport was reported as charter only [2], and Tioman’s had no commercial flights as of May 2024 [3]. Most travellers land on the mainland.
Which airports serve the east coast?
A guide reported that Kota Bharu is served by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly from the Klang Valley, and listed carriers on Kuala Terengganu routes. It did not confirm nonstop status, and other airports were not covered [1]. Check timetables for your own date, because carriers change.

How do you check the timing?
Work backwards from your return flight, not forward from the boat.
- Write the departure time of your flight.
- Subtract the check-in time the airline asks for.
- Subtract the road time from the jetty to the airport.
- Subtract a buffer for delays.
- The result is the latest time your boat can reach the jetty.
Take a flight at 17:00. If the airline wants you at the airport two hours before, you must be there at 15:00.
If the road takes one hour, you leave the jetty at 14:00. With a one-hour buffer, your boat must arrive by 13:00. Replace each number with your own.

What should you ask the agency?
- Is the flight ticketed by you, and who handles a change?
- Is baggage included, and does the boat have a luggage limit?
- Who collects us from the airport, and at what time?
- What is the plan if the flight is delayed?
- Is there a buffer night on the mainland, and is it in the price?
A better fit if…
An air-inclusive package may suit you if you want one booking and one contact. A package without flights may suit you better if you collect points, compare fares or travel from several cities. Whichever you choose, ask for the full chain of times in writing.
