Comparing resorts across two islands: what to normalise

Your two favourites are on different islands, so nothing about their prices lines up.

To compare resorts on two different islands, bring both trips to the same footing before you read a price. Match the door-to-door time, the boat arrangement, the fees, the season dates, the meals, the people and the cancellation terms. After that, compare rooms, and the better fit usually shows itself.

Without this, you end up comparing a room on one island with a room plus a long journey on another. Our hub guide on how to choose an island resort places this step in the wider decision, and the jetty connection planner helps with the first line.

What are the seven things to normalise?

Fill this table for each trip. Every row is something that can change a price or an hour.

To normaliseWhat to write down
Door-to-door timeFrom your home or airport to the room, including waiting
BoatJetty, crossing time, hours of service and who pays
FeesPark, conservation, council and jetty charges, per person
SeasonOpen and close dates in writing
MealsPlan per person, children’s rule, drinks
PeopleAges, swimmers, mobility needs, room count
CancellationTerms if the boat cannot sail

The practical point: the island with the nicer photographs may not be the better trip once the door-to-door time and the fees are in the same column.

What does this look like for Redang and Perhentian Besar?

Redang and Perhentian Besar show how much changes before you even look at a room. Redang boats leave from Merang, and the crossing is about 45 minutes [1]. Perhentian boats leave from Kuala Besut, and the crossing is about 35 to 45 minutes, with about 40 to Besar [2].

The two crossings are similar, yet the road to each jetty and the boat times differ. Perhentian speedboats run from about 07:00 or 08:00 to about 17:00 or 17:30 [4], so a late arrival can miss the last boat. A council charge of RM5 per visitor was reported in 2022 for Besut on top of the fisheries fee, and its current status is unknown [3].

Ask the resort whether it is in the package. For a full side-by-side, see our guide on Redang vs Perhentian Besar for a first trip.

How do you count door-to-door time?

Write the legs in order and add them up. Start at the front door. Add the road or flight to the jetty, the buffer before the boat, the crossing, and the walk or transfer to the room.

Do the same for the return, then compare the totals for the two islands. If one island costs more time each way, check whether the extra time buys something you want, such as a quieter bay. Your own numbers decide this, which is why the jetty connection planner asks for your starting point.

How do you handle fees and meals on different islands?

Fees and meals are the quiet differences. Park or council fees differ by place, and resorts differ in who collects them. Put every fee in a separate line for each person and decide whether the resort or you pay.

For meals, convert both trips to the same basis. If one resort sells room-only and the other sells full board (your main meals are included (check exactly which ones)), add the meals to the room-only quotation. Then use the island trip cost calculator with the same people and dates for both islands.

A better fit if…

Comparing by the total trip may be a better fit if:

  • you live far from both jetties.
  • one island needs an extra night just to arrive.
  • the budget is the deciding limit.

Comparing by the room first may be a better fit if:

  • both islands are close to you and the journeys match.
  • you have a clear need, such as a ground-floor room.
  • the season dates already match.

What is the next step?

Fill the seven-row table for each island and send us the gaps. If a resort cannot answer a row in writing, treat that row as unknown rather than as good news.

Tell us the two islands you are torn between, your start point and your dates, and we will help you bring both trips to the same footing before you read any price.

Common questions

Why is it hard to compare resorts on different islands?

Each island has its own jetty, boat time, fees and season, so the same room can cost different amounts of time and money to reach. Bring those to the same footing first, then compare rooms and meals.

What is door-to-door time?

It is the total time from your front door to your resort room, including the road or flight to the jetty, waiting, the boat and the walk to the room. It is usually longer than the boat time alone and decides how much island time you get.

Should I compare per-night price across two islands?

Not on its own. Per-night price hides the boat, fees and meals, which differ by island. Compare the total for the whole trip with the same people and dates, then divide by the usable island time if you want one number.

How do I handle different monsoon dates?

Ask each resort for its season dates in writing and check that your dates sit inside both. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, but exact dates vary by resort and year.
