Summer Bay or D'Coconut: comparing the packages

Your first island trip has two similar Lang Tengah quotations laid out in different ways.

To compare Summer Bay Resort and D’Coconut Lagoon fairly, put both quotations on one line sheet and match each item before you read the totals. We do not rank either resort, because our research has not confirmed their rooms, meals or season dates. What we can give you is the method.

Lang Tengah is a resort-boat island: guests usually cross from Merang in about 45 minutes, and the resort boat collects them [1]. That makes the boat line and the room line the two that most often differ. Start with the Lang Tengah island guide if the island is new to you.

What goes on the line sheet?

Copy this list into a note and fill one column per resort. Leave a cell blank if the quotation does not say.

ItemResort AResort B
Dates and number of nights
Room type and guests it covers
Bay and walk to the beach
Meals each day, including arrival and departure
Boat, both ways, with times
Marine park or other fees
Snorkelling or activities included
Closing dates for the monsoon
Cancellation and boat-cancelled rule

A blank cell is not a problem. It is your next question.

Which items do first-timers usually miss?

The boat is the first. A resort package may include the crossing, while a cheaper-looking quotation may leave it out. A guide also reports a public boat from Merang with an undated fare and seasonal times, so ask whether that boat or the resort boat applies to you [2].

The second is the arrival day. Ask whether lunch on arrival and the last meal on departure are counted.

The third is the beach. A room that is a long walk from the sand feels different from one a few steps away, and the price may not show it.

How do you divide the totals fairly?

Do the sums in the same way for both. First, divide each total by the number of guests it covers. Second, divide that figure by the number of nights.

Then add anything the quotation left out, such as boat fares or a fee paid on arrival. Only then compare the two figures. The island trip cost calculator will do this for you with your own numbers.

What message can you send both resorts?

Use the same words each time. Here is a version to adapt:

  • We are [number] adults and [number] children, travelling from [date] to [date].
  • Please quote the room type that fits us and name it.
  • Please list meals for each day, including arrival and departure days.
  • Please state the boat times, both ways, and whether they are in the price.
  • Please list any fee paid on arrival and its amount.
  • Please send your closing dates for the monsoon.
  • Please send your cancellation rule, including a cancelled boat.

If the replies come back in different orders, copy them onto the line sheet yourself. Our guide to reading an island quotation line by line can help.

A better fit if…

Summer Bay Resort may be a better fit if you want the bay confirmed up front, since it is a named bay. Its resort page lists what we know.

D’Coconut Lagoon may be a better fit if you want one price for stay, food and boat, but only when its quotation says so line by line. Its resort page lists the open questions.

Either may be a poor fit if you are on a tight schedule, since the boat times are set by the resort. For a quick side-by-side, read Summer Bay vs D’Coconut Lagoon.

Send us the two quotations you have received or your travel dates, and we will help you fill the line sheet so the comparison is done in one sitting.

Common questions

What is the first thing to compare in two Lang Tengah packages?

Start with what the price covers, not the price itself. Check the number of nights, the room type, the meals and whether the boat is included both ways. A lower total often means one of these is missing, so match them before you look at the amount.

Is a package cheaper than booking the room and boat separately?

We cannot say without both versions in writing. A guide reports a public boat from Merang, but the fare is undated, so confirm it. Ask the resort for a room-only rate and a package rate, then add the boat and meals to the room-only version and compare.

How do I know a quotation is complete?

A complete quotation names the room type, the dates, the meals on each day, the boat times, the fees and the cancellation rule. If a line is missing, ask for it by name. Our guide on reading a quotation line by line shows what each line should look like.

Should I ask for the quotation in a particular format?

Yes. Send the same numbered list to both resorts and ask them to answer in the same order. It saves you from hunting through different layouts, and it shows quickly which resort has not answered a question.
