Why two resort prices on one island differ
Two resorts on the same island quoted very different totals and you want to know why.
Two resorts on one island quote different totals because they usually count different things. The gap is most often in the room category, the meals, the boat, a fee, the dates or the number of guests. Find which line differs, and you will know whether the gap is real value or just a different way of counting.
Do not judge the cheaper one first. Our guide on what a resort price includes gives the seven-line reading, and the resort inclusion comparator puts both quotations in columns. For the wider order of decisions, see how to choose an island resort.
What are the eight causes of a price gap?
Each cause has one question that exposes it. Ask them in this order.
| Cause | How it shows up | The question |
|---|---|---|
| Room category | Different room name, size or view | Which exact category is quoted? |
| Meals | Room only, breakfast, or full board (your main meals are included (check exactly which ones)) | Which meals, which days? |
| Boat | Included, or added later | Is the boat return and who pays? |
| Fees | Park, conservation, jetty | Are fees in the total or extra? |
| Dates | Weekday, weekend, school holiday | Are both quotes for the same nights? |
| People | Adults, children, infants | What ages did each assume? |
| Residency | Resident vs non-resident rate | Which rate is this? |
| Channel | Direct, agent, platform | Does this channel add or omit a fee? |
The practical point: nearly every gap fits one of these eight. If none fits, ask the resort to list its lines.
Which causes show up in real pages?
Published pages give examples of the first four. Rawa Island Resort lists many room types, from a Hillside Deluxe to a Water Villa [1], so two quotes for the same resort can differ by room alone. It also states that board with three buffet meals is compulsory for all rooms [2], so a quotation for it already includes meals.
The marine park fee is reported at RM30 for a non-MyKad adult and RM5 for a MyKad adult [3]. A resident and a visitor can therefore see different totals for the same trip. A resort booking form separates children aged 3 to 12 from infants under 3 and shows no child rates [4].
The number of children and their ages can change the price. Confirm the current amounts and rules with the operator.
How do you test whether the gap is real?
Do a short check with your own numbers:
- Put both quotations side by side with the seven lines from our reading guide.
- Mark every blank in the cheaper one.
- Ask the resort what the missing lines cost, or take the other resort’s figure.
- Add the lines to the cheaper total and compare again.
If the gap shrinks to almost nothing, the first price was only counting less. If it stays, the difference is real, and you can decide if it is worth it.
A better fit if…
Looking for the cheaper total first may be a better fit if:
- your budget is fixed and meals are minor to you.
- you only need a bed and will eat elsewhere.
- both quotations list their lines clearly.
Looking for the cause of the gap first may be a better fit if:
- one quotation has no breakdown.
- the two resorts are very similar on paper.
- you suspect a fee or a meal is missing.
What is the next step?
Send both quotations with the dates and guests each assumed. We will help you find the line that explains the gap, and write a question to the resort about it. You can also test your own figures in the island trip cost calculator.
Common questions
Does a higher price mean a better resort?
Not by itself. A higher price may cover more meals, a boat transfer or a better room category, or it may only reflect a different way of counting. Compare the lines side by side before you decide that one resort is better.
Why would the same resort quote me two prices?
The room type, dates, meal plan, number of guests or booking channel may differ. Ask each source to list what is included, and compare like for like. A different channel can also add or leave out a fee.
Can residency change the price?
Sometimes it changes a fee, such as the marine park entry fee, which is reported as different for MyKad holders and others. Ask whether your quotation uses the resident or the non-resident rate, and for the fee in writing.
How do I find the real cause quickly?
Go through the eight causes in order and ask one question for each. The cause that turns up a blank or a surprise is usually the one. Fix that line first, then compare the totals again.
