School holiday surcharges on island packages
You have found school-holiday dates that suit the family and want to see the surcharge first.
A school-holiday surcharge is an extra amount a resort adds when your nights fall inside a peak band. It is usually written as a line in the quotation, not folded into the headline rate. Ask for it as its own line and the real total shows.
Our guide on how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia sets the wider picture. You can add the surcharge to your own numbers in the island trip cost calculator.
What shapes can a school-holiday surcharge take?
It takes one of four shapes. Knowing the shape tells you what to ask.
- A flat amount per room per night added to the base rate.
- A percentage on top of the room rate.
- A separate peak rate card that replaces the normal one.
- A fixed supplement for the whole stay, charged once.
Two quotes can look alike and still use different shapes. A flat amount hurts a long stay less than a percentage on an expensive room, so the shape matters more than the label.
Which school-year dates are peak?
Resorts set their own calendar, so the school calendar is a guide, not a rule. One report lists the 2027 breaks for Group A, which includes Terengganu. They are 5 to 13 March, 21 May to 5 June, 27 August to 4 September and the year-end break from 3 December [2].
The same report gives Group B dates a day later [2]. It comes from an aggregator and is not checked against the Ministry circular, so confirm before you book. One report places Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu in Group A [1].
Where does the monsoon meet the year-end break?
Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by year [3]. The year-end school break starts in early December, so it sits inside that closure for most of them.
If you plan an east-coast island for December, ask first whether the resort is open at all. West-coast and Sabah islands follow different seasons, so ask each one.
How do I see the surcharge before it reaches my total?
Write the stay night by night and mark which nights fall in the peak band.
- List each night of your stay as a separate row.
- Mark every night that falls inside the surcharge dates.
- Ask for the base rate and the surcharge for each marked night.
- Add the peak nights, then the normal nights, then any fixed supplement.
- Divide by the number of people to get the per-person figure.
For a family, the child rate and the extra-bed rule can change inside the peak band too. Our guide on school-holiday family budgets covers that part.
A better fit if…
Travelling inside the peak band may be a better fit if:
- your child’s school break is the only time the family can travel.
- you can book early and agree the surcharge in writing.
Travelling just outside the band may be a better fit if:
- you can take a few days of leave around the break.
- a one-night shift moves several nights out of the surcharge.
What should you ask before you pay?
- What are the exact surcharge start and end dates this year?
- Is the surcharge flat, a percentage or a separate rate card?
- Does it apply to children, extra beds and meal plans too?
- Is there a minimum stay in this period? See our guide on minimum stay rules in peak periods.
- Does a public holiday on top of the school break add more? See public holiday and long-weekend premiums.
Keep the answers in writing. If two quotes disagree, the one that shows the surcharge on its own line is the easier one to trust and to compare.
Common questions
How much extra is a school-holiday surcharge?
Each resort sets its own rule, so there is no single figure. It may be a flat amount per night, a percentage on the room, or a switch to a higher rate card. The only reliable answer is the written quotation, with the surcharge on its own line.
Do all school holidays carry the same surcharge?
No. Resorts often treat the longer mid-year and year-end breaks as peak, and the shorter breaks differently. Ask for the surcharge dates as start and end days, not as month names, so you can check them against your child's school calendar.
Are the school holiday dates the same in every state?
Malaysia splits states into two groups, and the break dates differ by a day or so. One report places Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu in Group A. Confirm the dates with the Ministry of Education circular and the school before you commit to a booking.
Can I avoid the surcharge by moving one night?
Sometimes. If the surcharge starts on a set date, shifting arrival by a day may drop a night out of the peak band. Ask the agent to price your trip with two or three arrival days side by side, and compare the totals.
