Chinese New Year island travel: price and availability
You hope to spend Chinese New Year on an island and need to know it is open.
Chinese New Year often falls in or near the northeast monsoon, so the first question is whether your island is open at all. If it is, the next questions are the festive rate, any dinner supplement and the minimum stay. Ask for all four in writing before you compare prices.
Our guide on the best time to visit Malaysian islands sets out the seasons. The island shortlist matcher can narrow the list to islands that suit your dates.
Is the island open over Chinese New Year?
One summary lists Chinese New Year 2027 on 6 and 7 February [1]. That date sits in the northeast monsoon window, which most east-coast resorts treat as a closure, roughly November to February or March.
MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 monsoon only days before it began, and we found no 2026/27 date yet [2]. So a resort’s season dates are the first answer to ask for, and sea warnings the last check before you travel [3].
What changes in price over the festive break?
Four lines tend to move. Ask for each one as its own row.
| Line | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Room rate | Rate on the eve, day one, day two and after | A premium may cover only some nights |
| Festive supplement | Is a dinner required, and for whom? | It can add per-person cost |
| Minimum stay | How many nights are required? | It can force a longer booking |
| Cancellation | What if the boat cannot sail? | Weather can break the plan |
A festive supplement is a per-person line, so a three-generation family should multiply by each age band. See mandatory gala dinner or festive supplements for how to read this line.
How do I price a reunion trip with several generations?
Write the group as age bands first: adults, seniors, children and infants. Then ask for each band’s price on the festive nights, because child ages and senior rates differ by resort.
- List everyone by age band.
- Ask for the festive-night rate for each band.
- Add the dinner supplement per person, if required.
- Add boat and park fees for each person.
- Divide the total by the number of people.
Our guide on school-holiday family budgets adds the child-rate side. If the festive window overlaps school holiday dates, read school holiday surcharges as well.
A better fit if…
Travelling over the festive days may be a better fit if:
- the break is the only time the extended family can meet.
- you confirm the island is open before you pay a deposit.
Travelling a week before or after may be a better fit if:
- you can take leave and prefer a quieter jetty.
- you want to avoid a compulsory festive supplement.
What should you ask before you pay?
- Is the resort open on my dates, and how do you know?
- What is the rate per night, with the festive premium shown?
- Is the festive dinner compulsory, and what does it cost per age band?
- What is the minimum stay for these dates?
- What is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?
Keep these answers in one message thread. If the answers are unclear, the plan is not ready to book.
Common questions
Are islands open during Chinese New Year?
It depends on the island and the resort. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and Chinese New Year can fall inside that window. Ask each resort for its season dates in writing before you compare prices.
Do island resorts charge more over Chinese New Year?
Many resorts treat the festive days as a premium period, but each sets its own rule. Ask for the rate on the eve, the first two days and the nights after, and check whether a reunion dinner or minimum stay is attached.
Is a reunion dinner supplement compulsory?
At some resorts a festive dinner is a required add-on on the eve, and at others it is optional. Resorts differ, so ask whether it is mandatory, what the menu covers and whether children are priced differently.
How early should I ask about Chinese New Year rooms?
Rooms for a short festive window can go quickly, so ask as soon as the dates are known. Request the availability and the rate in writing, along with the cancellation rule, so you can compare it with your plan B.
