Deepavali island holidays

Deepavali gives you a few days off, and you are weighing an island before the monsoon.

Deepavali often arrives near the edge of the monsoon season, so the first thing to learn is whether your island is still open. If it is, the next steps are the festive rate, the minimum stay and a plan B. Ask for all three in writing.

Our guide on the best time to visit Malaysian islands explains the seasons. The island shortlist matcher can help you pick islands that match your dates.

Why does Deepavali sit at the season edge?

The date follows a lunar calendar, so it moves each year, and it often lands in October or November. The northeast monsoon generally runs from November to March and is the main rainy season for the east coast [2].

MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 monsoon to begin on 13 November 2025, only days before it started, and no 2026/27 start date has been found [1]. A resort may therefore close sooner or later than you expect.

How do I check whether the resort is open?

Ask the resort, not a general travel page, and ask in writing.

  1. What is your last open date this year?
  2. Is the date fixed, or does it depend on sea conditions?
  3. If the boat cannot sail, what happens to my booking?
  4. Who decides, and when are guests told?
  5. Is there a refund or a free date change?

Keep the reply. If the resort says its last open date is just after your trip, ask what the plan is if the weather turns early. Sea warnings are updated about every three hours and can be checked on the MetMalaysia site and the myCuaca app [3].

What pricing lines should I compare?

A short break around a festival has the same lines as any other trip, plus a few that move.

LineQuestionWhy it matters
Room rateRate on each night of the festive blockPremium may cover only some nights
Minimum stayIs a two-night minimum applied?Changes the total for a short break
SupplementIs a festive dinner compulsory?Adds per-person cost
CancellationWhat if the sea closes the route?Protects the deposit

If the Deepavali weekend meets a school break, check school holiday surcharges too. Where a long weekend is created, public holiday and long-weekend premiums applies.

Which islands work on a different season?

East-coast islands are the ones most affected by the monsoon. Islands on the west coast and in Sabah follow different patterns, so each needs its own check.

Cross-border routes can also be seasonal. One source reports that direct Langkawi to Koh Lipe ferries run from about mid to late October.

They stop at the end of May, with no direct service in the middle of the year [4]. Confirm the current year’s start date with the operator before planning around it.

A better fit if…

An island trip over Deepavali may be a better fit if:

  • the festival break is your main free time this season.
  • you are happy to keep a back-up plan if the weather turns.

Waiting until the season reopens may be a better fit if:

  • your resort closes just after your dates.
  • you want fewer moving parts and a longer, calmer stay.

What should you ask before you pay?

  • What is your last open date this year, in writing?
  • Which nights carry a festive premium?
  • What is the minimum stay on those nights?
  • What happens to my deposit if the route closes?
  • Is a date change allowed at no charge?

If the answers are unclear, hold off on the deposit. Our guide on the island booking checklist lists what to settle before you pay.

Send us your Deepavali dates and the islands you are considering, and we will help you ask each resort whether it is open and how it prices the festive nights.

Common questions

Is Deepavali a good time for an east-coast island?

It sits close to the start of the northeast monsoon, so it can be the last open window or already closed, depending on the year and the resort. Ask for the resort's final open date in writing and what happens to your booking if the sea turns.

Does Deepavali always fall in the same week?

No. The date follows a lunar calendar and moves each year, so check the government holiday list for your travel year. Then ask the resort which nights it treats as festive and whether a long weekend is created around the date.

Do islands charge more during Deepavali?

Some resorts treat the holiday and the weekend around it as a premium block, others do not. Ask for the nightly rate on each night of your stay, and whether a minimum stay or festive supplement applies.

Which islands run on a different season?

Peninsular west-coast and Sabah islands follow different patterns from the east coast. Cross-border routes can be seasonal too, such as the direct Langkawi to Koh Lipe ferry, reported as running from about mid to late October. Ask the operator for the current year's dates.
