Public holiday and long-weekend premiums on islands

A public holiday makes a long weekend possible, and you want to know its effect on rates.

A public holiday can lift an island rate on the holiday night, the night before and sometimes the night after. The uplift is set by each resort, so the answer is in the written quotation. Ask for it as its own line next to the normal weekend rate.

Start with our guide to what an island holiday costs, then use the island trip cost calculator to test your dates.

Why does a public holiday change the rate?

Demand arrives all at once. A holiday next to a weekend lets people take a short trip without using leave, so a small island with a fixed number of rooms fills first. The resort then moves those nights to a higher rate.

The effect is strongest on islands with a short boat ride and limited rooms. If your plan is flexible, ask what the rate is on the nights just outside the holiday block.

Which holidays should you check for 2027?

One summary lists Chinese New Year on 6 and 7 February and Hari Raya Aidilfitri on 10 and 11 March [1]. It puts Hari Raya Haji on 17 May, with 18 May in Kelantan and Terengganu [1]. It is a secondary source, and the Hari Raya dates depend on moon sighting, so check the official gazette.

For the current year, Hari Malaysia is reported as 16 September 2026 beside the second school term break [2]. A holiday that lands in a school break often brings two premiums at once, so ask whether they stack.

How do I tell a holiday premium from the weekend rate?

Ask for the rate in three columns and compare them.

Night typeWhat to ask forWhat it tells you
Normal weeknightBase rate per roomYour starting point
Normal weekend nightWeekend rateThe regular Friday or Saturday uplift
Holiday nightHoliday rateThe extra on top, if any

If the holiday rate equals the weekend rate, the holiday adds nothing for that night. Our guide on the weekend versus weekday rate gap explains the middle column.

What do I do about minimum stays and extra requirements?

A holiday block often comes with a minimum stay of two nights or more. A gala dinner or festive supplement can also be added. See minimum stay rules in peak periods and mandatory gala dinner or festive supplements.

Add those lines to your calculator before you compare two resorts. A lower nightly rate with a mandatory supplement can end above a higher rate with none.

A better fit if…

Booking the holiday block may be a better fit if:

  • the holiday is the only time everyone in the group is free.
  • you book early and have the dates and rate in writing.

Moving to the nights outside the block may be a better fit if:

  • one or two weekdays of leave are possible.
  • you want a quieter jetty and a lower rate.

What should you ask before you pay?

  • Which exact nights carry a holiday premium this year?
  • Is the premium flat, a percentage or a different rate card?
  • Does it stack with the school-holiday surcharge?
  • Is there a minimum stay or a mandatory dinner on those nights?
  • What is the cancellation rule if the holiday date changes?

If the holiday date shifts after you book, ask in writing what happens to the rate. See our guide on booking early or late for how timing affects your options.

Tell us the holiday you are eyeing and your preferred nights, and we will help you ask the resort to show the weekend and holiday premiums as separate lines.

Common questions

Do all islands charge more on public holidays?

No. Each resort sets its own rule, and some charge a flat uplift, some a percentage, and some change nothing. Ask for the rate on the holiday night and on the night before, written next to the normal weekday and weekend rates.

Which nights does a holiday premium usually cover?

It is often the holiday night and the night before, and sometimes the night after. Because the rules differ, ask for the exact dates as a list, and check whether a Friday or Monday holiday turns the whole weekend into a premium block.

Can the same holiday be on different dates in different states?

Yes, for some holidays. One summary lists Hari Raya Haji on 17 May 2027 for most states and 18 May for Kelantan and Terengganu. Moon sighting can also shift dates, so confirm with the official gazette before you fix your booking.

Is a holiday premium different from the weekend rate?

It can be. The weekend rate is a regular uplift for Friday and Saturday nights, while a holiday premium sits on top of it for specific dates. Ask the resort to show base rate, weekend uplift and holiday premium as three separate lines.
